I wonder if any type of tape would work... I suppose I can just try it with some painters tape and see how it works out. Why painters tape? Mostly because it's just what I have in the house.

I am thinking I just might do several across the roof line or at the back of the car.
I would like to use magnetic sign materials depending on their cost.

Very interesting stuff. Are each of those little angles actually VGs?
Since the tape has a much lower profile (and lower drag?) than an AirTab,
the tape could hardly be seen going across the top of a CRV just before
the point of separation. (1 or 2 inches back from the edge?)..
I'm also wondering if ZigZag tape could be placed on the trailing edge of the hood?
Would it help smooth the transition across the (metal-to-glass) gap?
Perhaps allowing the windshield wipers to have less drag?
Cheers,
Rich

Xringer;
I simply don't know.
On the plus side, if you try it and it is a move in the wrong direction it will not be a big step in the wrong direction, unlike having dinosaur tooth size air tabs in the wrong place.

The photos edbso provided were pretty cool, now here is a question. On the trailing edge of the wing the air started to break up again, so what if you used another strip measured and placed behind in the same lines, do you think the air would continue to follow that pattern or will it get disturbed again and negate the results. I ask because on a roof line you may have to use multiple rows of the zig zag tape to cover the entire surface area ..
Curious I guess, learning as I read along .. LOL

Hi All,
My guess is that this technique will have its best effect where Vortices are generated, and the resulting vortex increases drag. This is different than the glider application.
So, maybe the top third of the C pillar is another good point of application in some cars with high angle rear glass.
But, I think the boundary layer also has to be thin for this to work well. And the upper third of the A pillar is such a place. The C pillar will have a thick low-energy boundary layer. So, maybe it will need thicker/longer zig zags.

"thicker/longer zig zags."..
Does scaling up the size of the ZigZags increase their effectiveness?
I'm thinking along the lines of 0.1 to 0.25 thick and about 3" to 4" cross for use on the trailing edge of my CRV's roof.
If something like that was effective, perhaps a strip of ZZs down the trailing edges of the sides would help too.?.
Making and installing those larger ZigZags would be a lot less complex than working out some kind of boat-tail for my CRV.
