The top grill I just blocked with coroplast, I don’t think it’s much of an actual intake on it’s own anyways.

For the lower grille, I found this thread:

I thought it would be a lot harder to make a block outside the recess, but it looks like it’s more straightforward than I thought. I’m just going to copy his work, and add a sliding panel where he put his cutout. That bell mouth is sleek, and a very smart idea, but I think I’m a bit too lazy, atm. If I can find an easy way, I’ll make a bit of a crude bellmouth on the intake cutout in the lower grille block.

The advantage of behind is stealthiness. The disadvantage of behind is that the grill doesn't support the block. The first bit of snow it hits is going to push the block backwards inside the engine bay.

Yeah, a whole lot better cosmetically but I’m fine with the look of a front block.
Now that I’m under here mapping out my panels, I’ve noticed this bumper is held together with a handful of zip ties and some faith, so a bit of reinforcement would be a good idea.

Actually, how stressed should I be about the weight of my mods? On bicycles, it’s best to go Keto-diet weightless but I imagine it’s not a huge deal to add some weight. I’m working on the paneling around the exhaust and I know the conditions here will annihilate any aluminum flashing. I’ve got several thin plates of steel that are much more rugged but they do have some heft to them, should I be worried much?

Weight can hurt acceleration, but if you're not doing stop & go all the time, it kelps out with kinetic energy.

Rotating mass has more effect, weight higher up has adverse effect. A steel plate belly will help it corner flatter.

Seems like a good idea. Just realized I’m going to try and protect and cover a steel underbody with a steel plate. Wonder what the road salt will think.

Take they VW bug approach and have drain holes everywhere then wash it down periodically
