Actually, some questions:

Would there be any benefit to making a panel to fill the inset area around the rear license plate mount? I feel like it’s kind of hair-splitting. I’ve ditched my windshield wiper deflector for the same reason, from what I’ve read it wasn’t that worth doing. Maybe it’s the same case with this, if air is even flowing over it all.

Second is just a continuation of my previous post. You can see that the grille area is inset quite a bit, and the bumper around it has a very irregular shape. I’m thinking a flat panel as a grille block there will either do nothing or possibly act like a parachute as it’s quite deep into the rest of the bumper. The lower area of the bumper has that difference in thickness come into play in the grille area, making it quite hard to try and get a block shaped to properly stream air along the bumper. Im not sure if there’d be a positive aerodynamic effect to covering the lower grille, lemme know if I’m overlooking something.

It may have been mentioned before, but I did not read through the entire thread.
If you do decide to try something down low in the snow/ice building area (s), make it:
A) really sturdy!
B) easily removable with
C) tools and a garbage bag or tarp you carry with you at all times

That kludge of snow/ice/gunk has some serious destructive power

Any good links for an adjustable lower grille block?

No. It's frustrating. The Audi 80/VW Dasher came with one but I can't find a diagram to quote and it's all removed from the example in my carport. They had a rectangular panel the slid horizontally under control of a manual choke cable.

You can either overbuild, do without for the season, or keep your fingers crossed and repair/replace as needed.

The curve of the grill is annoying. With a straight grill I’d rig up two sliding plates with an adjustment knob or crank in the cabin but I doubt it’ll be possible to get that functional on a curve. I think for now I’ll go with something similar, but without the cabin setup, and more sturdy. Still unsure if it will help MPG but it’ll be great for cold-starts.

If a velo can be considered a thread topic on here, I could post something as I work through. Currently I’m still designing the dimensions for the frame, but it’ll come along.

Are you thinking in front of or behind the stock grille piece?

Does that piece normally block ~30-40% of the opening? Remove and replace with perf metal with the same blockage. Back it with a second piece that can slide 1/2 the distance between the holes. Depending on the hole size it might go from fully unblocked to some % blocked.

It can slide side-to-side or up and down. Manual cable or small electric stepper motor.

I believe the prevailing wisdom on blocks (grilles and open fog-light opening etc..) is that you can do them at front/top surface or behind the opening.

Reason for this is that a pocket of pressurized air forms at such recesses and air flow goes around such pockets of air, similar to a half covered pickup truck bed.

Just say'n if you want to be stealthy with your work and can do it behind it's an option.

I think the reason you see blocks from the street-side is easy to see what you are doing, and zip tie to what's behind it is cosmetically simple.
