Build 85 corolla to save gas or make fast?
Is it worth it to build my 85 rwd corolla coupe to be a gas saver? Or should i stick to my original plan of making it go fast?
I'm not interested in doing roof chops or major body modifications to this car. I do need to put a new engine and manual trans in the car. I figure nows the time to look into different engine and transmissions for this car.

Only you can really answer that question. What would you like to do with it? If you just plan to commute with it, an MPG build might make more sense. If it's just for cruising around, restore it with the proper 4A or 4AGE engine. If you're after power, swap in whatever you can fit in it. Or sell it if you're undecided. It's probably worth some money if it's in good condition.

It depends on your priorities. If you want to enjoy a fun, spirited drive and potentially participate in track days or car meets, building the Corolla for speed could be more rewarding. However, if you prioritize daily driving efficiency and saving money on fuel, opting for a fuel-efficient build might be the better choice. Since you need a new engine and transmission, you can explore options like a smaller, modern engine for better fuel economy or a performance engine if speed is your goal.

An efficient drivetrain isn't necessarily mutually exclusive to a fun ride. Some go-fast stuff hurts economy, but others help. It doesn't need to be all one or all the other.

With a RWD layout it's quite easier to drop an oversized engine if you're really into power, yet it also allows some other experiences more focused on fuel savings with Diesel engines for instance.

Are diesels actually that much more efficient anymore? Yes they have higher compression, more energy in the fuel........

Thanks for the replies! i have a toyota v8 and nissan manual trans i can put in it. Diesel engines interest me because i have not owned one before. I see people swapping the vw diesel engines in all sorts of vehicles but thats front wheel drive. I can't think of common rwd small diesel engines. My dad is good with 4age engines but they are quite expensive now and he recommends going with a cheaper engine. I guess i should probably stick to the v8 since already have most of the pieces and know people thats done it before.
Ive considered putting off road tires on my 1999 corolla but never the 85. I've driven the 99 25,000 miles so far this year. It would hurt me to tear up the car taking it offroading so i decided i probably shouldn't do that.

In such an ancient model, it might be easier to register it with some engine still free from most of those troublesome emissions-control devices.
