You mean the Oldsmobile Diesel engines? They were not actually based on gasoline engines, but they were meant to not require expensive tooling to be added to the production lines. BTW there were times when a precarious Diesel conversion was popular in Chevy straight-6 engines, replacing the engine head with one from the Mercedes-Benz OM352 engine.

In finland, diesels are taxed so we have a history of fiddling with car regulations and loopholes, for example extending pickup beds, replacing rear seats with hard on stw's imports with the right age and exemptions, building a wall between rear and front seats, etc. Finland's government likes to tax the hell out of driving.

The LK5 or LLV 4-cyl choices from the Colorado/Canyon twins would be a good choice. Torquey and modestly powerful, already set up for north-south installations.
