Carbon hood/trunk

I have a 97 civic HX, I'm going todo a grill block, rebuild the tranny (synchro are on the way out). I was looking at shedding some weight. Anyone pick up a carbon hood and trunk? Would you recommend it? Also my speedo is 4mpg off will the tranny rebuild and new clutch fix this or are the tires to big for it?
Any input or recommendations would be great thanks.

Those should not be your first weight loss modifications. Wheels and battery first. Fiberglass body parts are far more cost effective by the way.

They took a civic and did all kinds of weight reduction mods to it.
It took a crap load of money to do some of these mods.
There is no way a majority of them would ever be economical.

On imports like Hondas and Toyota who already use paper thin sheet metal the fiberglass parts are almost as heavy if not heavier than the OE parts.
On older American vehicles the fiberglass parts are usually always lighter.

I had a carbon hood on my em1 a couple years back. I loved it, it is definetly lighter but didnt make too much of a difference. I only bought it because my oem hood flew up on my and smashed my windshield and i could afford it at the time, lol.

Most "carbon' hoods are just fibre glass, with a single top layer of carbon added for appearance. If you're after weight savings fibre glass is the cheaper option, although then you have to factor in the cost of painting it.

A real life 100% carbon hood will set you back $2000+.

I thought about maxing out on carbon fiber with Slambo ('99 HX), but the math didn't work.

Just took a look at Seibon … they've marked their trunk down from $820.00 to $492.00. OEM style hood's $700.

Still mulling a CF-wrapped upper flush grill.
