Sometimes I lurk about how an improved derivative of an older engine could be suitable to a modern car. Even if such old engine is not so ancient at all...

Like swapping a Subaru boxer four for the Beetle/Samba engine?

The suburu engine is all the rage in restored late model vanagons converted for camping.

Well, sort of. Maybe, with an oil cooler, it could still fare quite decently while fitted to a front-engined car...

But I was actually considering random water-cooled 4-cyl engines such as the Chevrolet 153 or the Volkswagen EA827. Sure they're more Brazilian-proof than most modern downsized engines, and would remain Brazilian-proof enough with sequential port-injection instead of a carburettor.
