Use google translate to translate text messages, I sold my sisters Toyota highlander to a Korean family who spoke zero English and we would just text to communicate. The husband would look over the car and the wife would text me the questions while I was standing next to them.

No, he just looked like him, but I did purchase two cars from my father.

Ha, I bought my first car (a '85 Civic manual) from my dad.
Turns out he drove it with his left foot resting on the clutch pedal, always.
With 60K on the odo, me just owning it, it needed new clutch plates...
He now owns a Fit Hybrid, if he sells that I might buy it going against experience

Bottom of the barrel!
$400 for a 2001 with 300k km (186k miles) and is within my C.R.A.P. Prius radius:

2001 prius, recently on the road up for sale. Requires service. Starts but does not run well. Priced for quick sale. Would make a great parts car as well. Comes with winter tires on rims. Selling as is. Inside clean with minimal spots that should clean up easy.

Another one gets away.
Surprise, surprise: that 2004 in Montreal with the front quarter scrape? Sold.
The hunt continues...

I'm aiming for a 2nd gen (better MPG, hatchback, battery history & easier resale).
But I won't turn down a 1st gen if a good deal turns up. Plus there would be even more deals on 2nd gens in another year or so.

temptress!
I haven't actually seen a gen. 1 on the road for probably a few years now. Until yesterday.
This Quebec-plated one went blasting past me on the 401, going probably 120+ km/h / 75 mph. (May as well be a million miles an hour to me.)
Rusted out rocker panels whistling in the wind.
On Friday there were three, separate, dead gen. 1's advertised for sale within an hour and a half of here for $500-$600 each. But I'm not feeling quite that crazy and/or ambitious. (Also, lacking a ready means of transporting them may be a factor.)
Nothing else on the radar or the horizon right now. That concludes this C.R.A.P. Prius update.

How far are you prepared to travel?
I know the C$<US$, but have you considered buying in the States?
Prices seem lower, you can find one from outside the rust belt, selection much greater.
Try CarMax in Atlanta or Florida
