Chorizo repair thread (2000 black Honda Civic HX)

Is this the right section? I see http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...ead-33577.html here, but http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...ead-33780.html in EcoModding Central!

I finally have the time and money to take care of non-essential problems with my car, so I went through all of my old threads to figure out what I have done and what is unresolved.

Thank you so much for putting up with me! I would especially like to thank user removed. I hope he is doing well, wherever he is!

I had a check engine light, but since it did not say “CHECK ENGINE’ like in my Forester, I somehow thought it was a “check transmission” light, which is only part of the embarrassment. I was horribly busy and stressed with school and drill. It idled rough, I had my girlfriend replace the spark plugs and wires (because it was easy), and then I used Seafoam, which finally worked:

I turned off my engine at a railroad crossing, but kept my lights on, and killed the battery. Costco replaced it for free one week later.
Over a year ago, someone put a card in my window, which was pulled inside. My window would not roll all of the way up afterwards and became worse over time. I took apart the door, removed the card, but could not see the problem. I lubricated the channels (everyone says to use silicone, but the guy at O'Reilly's insisted I needed white lithium) and then removed the window regulator. Teeth were definitely worn down, so I replaced it. I did not like using an Autozone part, but it was a fraction of the price of an OEM one, only $30.26 with tax, but seemed equally sturdy.

It seems like my brakes are intermittently dragging. I took it to my friendly neighborhood mechanic and they could not find a problem, although they said I needed to replace my brakes in five thousand miles. What is that in ecomodder miles? That was almost two weeks ago and I have driven nearly 1,500 miles. The sound went away, but is slowly returning.

Cigarette lighter. It looks like the previous owner replaced it. The fuse is fine. My stereo has USB in, but it keeps trying to read music off of my phone. I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/PortaPow-Micro...ilpage_o00_s00, but after four or five months my stereo started trying to read music again. Curiously, the cable that came with the phone worked perfectly--for about a month. Of course, my car gets so hot now the phone turns off.
My car is black! It was 115° here yesterday! That is 46°C! 319K! I am trying to find a place to Plasti-Dip my car. I do not have a respirator, compressor, or anything else, so I figure the price may be similar, but it would look better, but I have only found two in the Phoenix area! I know a guy that buys cars at auction and sells them at a small dealership. I am curious what he could say about a decent paint shop. He has offered to take me to an auction. I also found a clean silver 1998 Accord on Craigslist for $1950. I want to look at it, but I do not want to deal with 22/27! :)

Wow! Quite a thread starter! Holy wall of text!

On the brakes thing, I would say 5,000 miles for normies translates into near infinite for us: first because that dude probably wants to sell you on stuff you don't need and second because serious hypermilers only use brakes when there is no other way to sadely slow or stop (traffic situations, hills, emergencies).

DON'T get clips instead of servicing the brakes. Seems like maybe you have a brake piston that is intermittently sticking. When were the brake lines last bled? When the mechanic said replace the brakes did he mean just the pads or something more significant? Did he say?

Xist 06-04-2016 08:01 PM

He said he would need to look up an estimate, but I told him I was late for work, I would call for it, but I haven't. I thought the rears were replaced a couple of years ago at U Fix It, but I wrote "replace brake cylinders" in my garage.

I was surprised how much maintenance my car has required, but $1627 over 31 months is not that bad.

Xist 06-18-2016 08:54 PM

Cracking Honda door panels

I believe I experienced this with my Prelude. I probably did with my Accord. I remember taking off the panels because the upholstery was falling off, but I hit an elk before I was able to fix that. I have removed the panels a couple of times in my Civic, they were cracked the first time, and taking them on and off has only made them worse.

I think the Arizona heat is especially rough on plastic.

When I fixed my window, a piece of plastic fell off. I epoxied it back and it simply fell off again the other day. I thought the only actual fix was replacing the panels, but all of the ones that I see cost hundreds of dollars, although I do not have any idea how to search for them on car-part.com. The plastic seems to be cracking further while mounted. This guy: Cracked Door Panel Repair / Reinforcement | ClubCivic.com - Your Online Civic Community

recommends using this stuff: SEM 39747 Multi Purpose Panel Adhesive Dual Mix Cartridge 207ml | eBay

Leave it alone? Is there some cheaper alternative? Is that product or something similar available in larger quantities? Thanks!

California98Civic 06-18-2016 10:14 PM

I had a couple cracked areas in mine. A couple years ago, I repaired the cracking, concave areas with a little fiberglass resin and cloth. I did it kinda on a lark, because I was in there anyway. Still holding fine.

Xist 06-18-2016 11:45 PM

Great to know! I was worried the fiberglass would not stick to the plastic!

Xist 12-13-2016 01:25 PM

It has now been six months and ten or eleven thousand miles since that mechanic told me I needed new brakes in five thousand miles. I use them sparingly, but I guess I would not know if there was really a problem without using them hard.
I hate to find out...

Jedi_Sol talked to me about putting fiberglass on the back of my air dam, but said it would separate eventually.

Costco replaced my battery for free yesterday and a friend helped me do a compression test. YouTube mechanics said 5-10 seconds, so she did it three, and we got 140, 140, 130, and 130 (Difference: 10, 7-8%). I saw more people saying 5-10 seconds, so I rented the gauge again, drove twenty-five miles to warm the engine, and then realized I was out of time, so I drove straight to my first client's house wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and ratty old shoes instead of a polo, dress pants, and nice shoes. Today I was running out of time again, so I just drove six miles to Costco for gas. I came home and got:
Five seconds: 135, 141, 151, 149 (Difference: 16, 10%)
Ten seconds: 154, 154, 159, 166 (Difference: 12, 8%)
Ten seconds with oil: 166, 172, 174, 181 (Difference: 15, 9%)

Here is my compression test: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...tml#post471687

Also, I quoted my Honda FSM as saying "compression should be 184psi (nominal), 135psi (minimum), and no variation greater than 28 psi between cylinders."

Your numbers appear acceptable, though only minimally so in the five second dry test.

Xist 01-13-2017 01:32 AM

Yes, I saw people quoting those figures, but tracked down the (technical?) service manual, and saw the 28 PSI figure some people used, while others argued 10 - 15%, without citing sources.

For how many seconds did you test?

"to do a compression test 100% right the engine needs to be cranking at its normal speed, if you have a weak battery or starter then you wont be cranking at full speed." d16 compression? - Honda-Tech

I replaced the battery between the first test (140, 140, 130, 130; 3 strokes) and the second (135, 141, 151, 149; 5 strokes). I find it strange that the first two cylinders tested approximately the same, while the second two increased 19 - 21.

Should I do a leakdown test?

Daox 01-13-2017 08:35 AM

Does it matter? Your engine is within specifications per Honda. No, its not in perfect shape. Are you considering rebuilding it? What is the purpose of testing the compression?

I found out the compression was on the low side on my Metro after having it a few months. It didn't use oil, and I continued on to get 50 mpg lifetime over 2 years of ownership. Did I consider rebuilding it? Yep, but I never did, and I never had any issues either...

If you're not looking to rebuild the engine, just make sure to keep oil in it and you'll be fine IMO.

Stubby79 01-13-2017 11:19 AM

Listen to Daox.

Do you know if you're leaking oil or burning it?

Cyberbullying

My engine has lost 36 - 50 PSI in sixteen years and seven months. On average, a couple of PSI a year. Ya gotta give it to me straight, Daox! How long do I have?!

Having lost 23% of my compression, what effect do you think that would have on fuel economy? I understand a $400 rebuild kit would have purchased a great deal of gas, but the HXes on Craigslist are all selling for about what I paid for Chorizo ($2,700), but the blue book is only $1,238!

I replaced the head gasket in a Subaru. I am pretty sure I can rebuild. (Insert 6 Million-Dollar Man) quote here. Meanwhile, I have the Accord.

Should I check that car's compression for reference? :D

Also, hundreds of dollars and endless hours would be worthwhile for this conversation:

Sister: "When are you going to stop driving that Civic?! I bet your engine will give out any day now!"
Xist: "I just rebuilt it."
Sister: "You did what?! Now the transmission will wear out!"
Xist: "I rebuilt that, too."
/static

Plus, I read they put a gold star sticker on your man card.

No, really, it is win-win. If I keep myself busy with that I would not have time to harass you guys! :D

I do not remember in what thread Balto talked about his compression and strangely, searching for "Balto compression" gave me one page, nothing relevant.

Please remind me what happened to your Metro. Thanks!

Stubby, there is not a single drop of oil in my parking spot, although I have not noticed smoke.

Gasoline Fumes 01-13-2017 05:05 PM

Cranking with throttle open? Gauge accurate?

California98Civic 01-13-2017 05:55 PM

Sure, you could do a leakdown too. I have never done that test. But assuming you did the test properly and your gauge is working properly, you have revealed significant wear that is not outside acceptable ranges yet. It ain't good, but it ain't broke yet, either.

Xist 01-14-2017 11:13 AM

You want me to calibrate the gauge? Mechanics have said each gauge reads differently, but what is important is how close the cylinders are, although I am pretty sure being at or below minimum specifications is important. From what I can tell, I can find a place that will calibrate your gauge or hook it up to a compressor and compare gauges. I would need a compressor for a leakdown test.

Quote:

With the above said, you squirt the tablespoon of oil (SAE 30W is fine) into a cylinder that is reading low. Crank the engine two revolutions or so to spread the oil then retest the cylinder. If the compression comes up markedly, 40 PSI or more, the trouble is poor ring to bore sealing. If compression doesn't increase much, about 5 PSI, then the problem is probably with the valves. It could also be pulled head studs or a warped cylinder head.
Technical Articles at Greg's Engine & Machine

Quote:

Reading results
No engine will have perfect sealing with 0 percent loss. Five to 10 percent loss indicates an engine in great to good running order. An engine between 10 and 20 percent can still run OK, but it’ll be time to keep an eye (or ear) on things. Above 20 percent loss and it may be time for a teardown and rebuild. Thirty percent? Major problems. The percent of leakage should also be consistent across the cylinders. Any great differences indicate a problem in that cylinder.

Hearing problems
Beyond getting an overall picture of engine condition, the engine leakdown test is an excellent way to pinpoint where problems are before tearing down the engine. Listening for where the air is escaping by ear can isolate the problem.

Intake valve : Air whistling out of the intake, carburetor or throttle body indicates a leak at the intake valve.
Exhaust valve : Air heard hissing out of the tailpipe, turbocharger or exhaust manifold means an exhaust valve leak.
Piston rings : Whistling or hissing out of the PCV valve, oil filler cap hole or dipstick tube means the air is pushing past the rings. Suspect ring or cylinder wall wear.
Head gasket : Air bubbles in engine coolant seen at the radiator filler cap could mean air escaping into the coolant past the head gasket.
Cracked cylinder head : Bubbles in coolant or coolant being pushed up out of the radiator neck can also indicate cracks in the cylinder head or cylinder walls.
https://mobiloil.com/en/article/car-...-leakdown-test

Now I want to see if Mobil has a compression test page, but it is kind of irrelevant!

Compression increased 12 - 18 PSI from wet to dry--"If compression doesn't increase much, about 5 PSI, then the problem is probably with the valves. It could also be pulled head studs or a warped cylinder head." My car has lost 19.5 - 27% per cylinder. "it may be time for a teardown and rebuild."

Does it actually benefit me to know what the specific problem is? I love data, but I am not sure this is worth the time, energy, and money. Meanwhile, if I rebuild the engine, I will replace all of the seals and inspect the metal components.

Warped head--on my car? Wouldn't I have that machined like for the Subaru head gasket? Pulled head studs?

Weird. Most people obsessed over replacing the head studs when I replaced the head gasket, but RockAuto's kit does not include it: RockAuto offers a DNJ ENGINE COMPONENTS EK297M Master Kit; Includes Oil Pump & Timing Belt or Timing Kit for $369.99. Perhaps looking for another car would make more sense, but I probably would not be able to get another HX.

Rebuilding the engine would save me money eventually over driving the Accord daily. It is an automatic!

I actually think that's not the case because a used volt cheap enough to run cheaper than an old civic will possibly be a vehicle close to needing some prsistent and hard to locate repairs. That Volt is a much more complex machine. I also would counsel maybe rebuilding for $400 is possibly far better than another ancient Civic for $2000 but with mystery problems. But that's me... I still drive the 1998 Civic I bought in early 2001 from a dealer. My wife has her car, but this is the only car I have owned these last 16 years.

EDIT: I mean, I know everything wrong/right with this car. Another one would have surprises. And I love the Volt!

My grill block and air dam is 13" tall. I cut off the remaining 11" and used ABS paste to attach it to the back of the original piece and then screwed it back onto my bumper. I had poured acetone on the two pieces, but it dried without doing anything. I had read people just dissolved ABS pieces in acetone to make their own paste and that definitely seems like what I bought, $4 for four ounces, and only covered about two square feet, but it is holding. Hopefully closing off the opening in the winter and making it more rigid will help measurably. When it gets warmer I need to cut a new opening, supposedly in front of the radiator, but when I use AC I am pretty sure that needs ventilation, too. I am going to try it with bell-mouthing this time and really need to get around to ducting.

I happened to notice that 9/12 of the tanks immediately following cleaning the EGR passages were a couple of MPG lower than before. Did it take five thousand miles to reprogram, burn out the carbon, or something else?

Maybe Seafoam after cleaning the EGR would be in order.

Also, I just reported someone cloning the first 110 words of this in a new thread, and never posting again.

I went to take pictures first thing today once the sun was up, but I had been trying to win Publisher's Clearinghouse.

Five million winners and counting!

How come I haven't won anything yet?! Not a nickel! Not a coupon or gift card!

My battery was down to 5%, so I plugged it into a battery pack and hosed off Chorizo so that the paint looked better. There is no helping the spot where I tried to buff out cracked clear coat that turned out to be crazing. I had set down my phone charging in direct sunlight. It was in the seventies, but my phone was overheating, so I put it in the refrigerator. When I came back I couldn't find it. I asked my brother to no avail, so I did the "Where is my phone" feature.

My brother put it in my room. How was I supposed to find it there?! :)

The top right of the hood is damaged from where my brother forced it closed while it was propped open. The windshield is cracked from the bent corner of the hood stabbing the windshield. However, I can charge my brother for those once I have everything else fixed. There are small holes in the bumper from where I screwed rolled plastic to it.

I have the stereo... somewhere... :)

I think the CD player doesn't work and the eject button ejected.

Shouty recommends upgrading to an android head. Would I finally be able to focus and remember stuff? :)

I have a letter from Honda about the airbag, but they say they don't have a fix. Who are they?! Volkswagen?! :)

What ever happened to this car?

I keep trying to work on other projects, like the wheelchair ramp for Mom's friend, except after I pulled a stump that wasn't in the way, it snowed twice, the friend was hospitalized twice, and other stuff came up, when I announced that I was going to work on it after work, Mom fired me, and the friend died before the guy that was supposed to do it even started on it.

Now I am trying to move the shed so that I can put in insulation and drywall before anything happen to them sitting outside, although I have plastic over them, but while everyone wants to use an array of sharpened rebar to anchor a winch, I have been talking about fixing my Civic so I can park it in back, and use it as an anchor.

I keep pulling my 16-pound, 6' digging bar out of the ground. Certainly the same thing would happen with sharpened rebar, and if they come flying, they would fly in the general direction of the poor soul working the winch--me.

Unfortunately, the last time that I removed the heater core I left the parts on the front porch, out of the way.

I can only find one screw. I am sure that someone kicked the other two down the crack between the sidewalk and the house.

How do I get them out?!

How do I order replacement screws?!

I could probably find adequate ones from Ace, but I just took a coronavirus test yesterday. I feel obligated to wait for my results. However...

I feel fine. I think I'll go for a walk. I feel happy... I feel happy.

It has been 3 years and 5 months since I blew the head gasket. USAA is charging me $228.61 every 6 months, so I have paid $1,562.17 to insure a nonrunning car.

Huh.

I kept saying that I need to fix the car and then start my own agency, but I got hired on at a second agency, which pays better than the first. I haven't started yet, but I was scheduled to see a client in-person (an hour away) one week after I submitted the paperwork.

The usual timeline is 3 months!

They said it took them a year to open their agency, so there doesn't seem like a good ROI in starting my own, since I didn't know that I would be able to find any clients on my own.

I have been trying to fix up my Accord. I need to go back out with a hammer and a pretty little dolly, then duck in and out hundreds of times trying to fix the roof dents.

I can have a primed bumper delivered for under $100, but this set of matching paint, primer, and clear coat is $59 for 10-12-ounce cans--and you need 3! https://smile.amazon.com/ERA-Paints-...dp/B07L3N94XV?

This has a gallon of each, but I would need to buy a sprayer, and it is $440: https://smile.amazon.com/TouchupXS-H...dp/B08K7PNMVN/

Would I rather spend $440 to repaint both bumpers and touch up the car or $100 to Rustoleum everything?

I haven't found color-matched paint for less--just more, without primer or clearcoat.

I can order a painted--and folded--bumper for $300 or a painted and unfolded one for $600.

None of these are good options!

I need to call a Honda parts department and special-order those little screws so I can put my Civic together.

I bought a smaller plastic welder and patched the Accord bumper again. I haven't had a chance to sand it, but hopefully I did it right this time!

I was going to work on that when apparently I hit something on the highway and ripped the splash shields under my Camry.

I pulled that this morning so I could go to the VA. I am going to repair it and reinstall.

The difficult material I needed to acid-wash my Accord cat came in, so I need to get the easy materials and acid-wash it.

I am going to treat the current and the old one.

I feel you pain. I've got three cars [minimally] insured through USAA. Two of them have expired plates. Each month I hope to get the tags renewed, but each month USAA takes a $109 bite.

Is there a reason you guys insure unused cars? I only pay for 3/6 cars I have. I'm about to drop one of them though. They have just been sitting while I get project money accrued.

I, for one, keep telling myself that I am going to fix and then drive it tomorrow, but collision doesn't do anything for parked cars, does it?

Oh boy!

freebeard 11-13-2021 01:13 PM

M_a_t_t -- The Superbeetle is streetable but I can only drive one at a time. The Dasher is on the insurance so I can sell it, but that process is hung up.

All my parking is gridlocked but once the Superbeetle is in the carport it goes into hiatus. I think that today I will take the Dasher off and tell people they can only test drive within the park.

I don't turn coverage on and off, because I've had insurance companies not step up when they should have.

That's no good!

I had comprehensive insurance on the rental that I scraped, but USAA told Enterprise that I wasn't covered.

I don't know how that worked out, but I didn't hear about it again.

When I was in college I had a 1952 Ford Fairlane (2-door hardtop, cream over light blue) that was totaled while it was parked in the street in front of my parent's house. By a sailor on leave.

My Allstate insurance agent dragged his feet until the sailor returned to duty, and then I was SOL.

Did you only have collision?
