Civic HX highway mileage
For a while now, I've been thinking about what to do with my Paseo. Its getting older, but still only has 80k miles on it. But, I'd also like something I don't have to P&G everywhere to get good mileage. This means a TDI, hybrid or a lean burner (or EGR mod + taller tranny in the Paseo which is still an option).
Anyway, today I found a 2000 Civic HX for sale locally. I looked at the list of HXs in the EM garage and was really not impressed with the numbers that the HX drivers here are getting. The highest one I found was mobythevan's HX1 at 48 mpg. I do a lot of highway driving with the Paseo. So I guess I'm going to ask the HX drivers out there is that really all you guys are getting out of the HX? Is it lower because of more city driving? My commute is 21 miles, probably 16 miles of that is 55 mph highway and smaller rolling hills. I don't know if I'd be happy if I couldn't pull 50+ out of a new(er) car. Will I be able to do that with a mostly highway commute?

I've wondered this about the HX cars too... what numbers are they capable of holding in lean burn cruise, and at what speeds?
(Useful to know if you're primarily using the car for highway trips.)

For that matter, at what speeds can the 5mt Civic Hybrid do lean burn, and at what mpg?

My car will do 45+ mpg at 55 mph on cruise control. (tested once )
The HX has better gear ratios, slightly better aero, and lean-burn. I'd guess 50 mpg for steady cruise, and *much more* with a Daox-type driver.
old epa ratings:
my car: 33/38
2000 HX: 35/43

I'd get that car if I were you, Tim. I didn't like my EX so much when I found out about its gearing, but I'm starting to really appreciate it. I think the ultimate 7th gen civic would have the HX motor, EX 1-4 gear ratios, then a "nerd gear" tall 5th gear. I'm beginning to suspect that my high gear ratios are actually advantageous for P&G because the pulse is over so quickly. I'd be very curious to try an HX out on a fuel economy course that I've already done with the EX and see how I do. Initially I think I'd do better with the HX, but now I'm reconsidering. I feel like lean burn really is only useful on the highway when I P&G as much as I (we) do, but boy would I like to have it. BTW my car is for sale too - $2400 . I'm almost done getting the CRXFi on the road.
PS: On my trip up to Montreal for the FE rally, I got 53, on the way back I got 56 (with premium E0 Quebec gasoline). I was all about P&G on the nice rolling 1000 islands pkwy, but on I81 I hardly ever cut the engine, and I average 60mph (I DWL very slightly). 650 miles roundtrip.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Unfortunately the HX has too many miles on it.
Also bumping for HX owner info.

It probably spins the wrong way!
VX Paseo would be cool, but a ton of work.

If you're considering an Insight, they're crazy-cheap right now. I've seen them for under $3000.
