Not so, at least from my understanding of how 2-cycle engines work. First, on every stroke part of the incoming fuel/oil-air mixture is sucked right through the cylinder and out the exaust port. There's a major source of unburned hydrocarbons, and poor fuel efficiency.

direct injection eliminates that though, since the injector can be commanded to only fire once the exhaust port has been covered.

Which car is that? BTW oil injection is often quoted to be more efficient in oil consumption because it runs a lower amount of oil at higher RPM than it would be with pre-mix, which also helps to decrease the smoke.

Subaru 360 smokes during start then goes clean after it heats, If I rev it up @wot (possibly more than it should be as its a low RPM 2 cycle) it smokes a lot

So long as I am not near redline I do not note the car smoking excessively during my normal runs even at wot.
