Crash and Burn - A Resignation

Dear Ecomodders,

This is my formal resignation from the site.

I totaled my new Honda Insight this evening. I was in the far left lane, a lady cut me off from the center lane causing me to instinctively turn the steering wheel to move further away to avoid contact while pressing the horn. As soon as I turned the wheel slightly, the hail and rain caused the car to go sideways, at 65 MPH. The car in front of me saw stopped cars ahead and quickly got into the center lane to avoid running into them last second. I corrected the car back to straight and ran into the SUV in front of me at about 55 MPH. After the accident, they told me they were doing about 15 MPH.

My thumb was broken backwards from the force of the airbag, my nostril was torn on the inside, my neck and back are having severe pain and I lost all feeling in my foot.

Had I been in the Passat still, with no airbags, I'd likely be dead. Thank you Honda for keeping me safe. Thank you Ecomodders for the awesome time here on the site.

In case anyone was wondering, I have driven the Insight about 8K miles since I bought it last month. It has been an awesome experience and I am happy to report that the other day I was able to get my best trip record with 89.2 MPG US over the course of 115 miles.

I have many parts available from the vehicle. Steering wheel back is all good. If you need any parts, LET ME KNOW! I will continue to check this site for a few more weeks.

Daniel

Glad you weren't hurt worse.

But I don't get the connection between a crash and quitting EM unless you aren't going to drive anymore?

I don't plan on getting another vehicle anytime soon. I've decided to pursue my dreams after this experience and they don't require I have a vehicle. Mainly just a lot of traveling out of country, being with people close to me and experiencing things I want to before I die.

I will get another Insight eventually, but it'll be a year or longer probably.

Hey Daniel, hang in there - there is a lot of moral support for you here. Even if you don't get another vehicle immediately, staying on EcoModder will keep the brain active and hopefully help you get on with life.

The main thing is that you are in one piece and functioning.

Stay safe.

Simon

Whelp.

It sounds like your Insight is[/was] a safer vehicle than my Superbeetle. I totaled it on black ice two years ago up in Portland, and had it rebuilt just because I didn't want to be the person who took it off the road. In my case if it had happened 50 feet further down the on-ramp, I probably would have died.

You should at least post pictures of it, so other Ecomodderers can pick over it's bones. Maybe it's a candidate for a full EV conversion.

Daniel - glad you got the car straightened out before impact so the crumple zone structure & airbags could do their job!

Good luck & have fun on your adventures.

Wow, sorry about the accident! Hope you heal and the pain goes away ASAP. I'd implore you to stay and keep chatting with us, but if you're anything like me, your participation in a forum naturally ebbs and flows with how much you do that activity.

All the best with your next adventure.

Recover. Then make decisions. It sounds like no permanent injury. A blessing, that is. You don't have to retire from this community, if you change your mind. Just put it all on hold and take care of recovery first.

Regards,
California98

My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.
