Did Francis Ford Coppola hide this working EV1 from GM?
On a recent TV series version of Jay Leno's Garage, Jay interviewed Francis Ford Coppola, who's apparently a big EV enthusiast. And he's got an EV1 in his garage.
That's super interesting, because after rounding up & crushing the EV1 fleet, only about 40 universities and museums were given cars for their static collections. Those cars were intentionally disabled -- drivetrain parts removed -- by GM.
Yet here we have a private owner with an EV1. How'd that happen?

Is it intact? Would it still work? Dunno!

Hope the "greasee" didn't wipe his hand on his pants. That'll make a hole.

Lots of fabulous GM show/concept cars were supposed to be crushed too, but they keep turning up for restoration from a certain junkyard. Good!

Imagine the EV1 repowered even with plain ol' Leaf batteries.
When the EV1 got upgraded to its NiMH cells it had about 26 kW-h of energy aboard and had 160 miles worth of range. A new Leaf is carrying 30 kW-h, and the pack weighs less than half as much. Now drop that kind of capacity into the EV1 with its ultra-slippery profile and I can only guess what its range might do. 250 miles doesn't sound wrong.

Did he just reveal this now? I can just imagine Coppola sneaking up to an engineer:
"Psst! You, with the glasses! Wanna see my EV1?"

Nah! He (Coppola) only mentioned AFTER he was SURE all the GM management & engineers had seen ALL of the GODFATHER shows...assuring his protection (wink, wink).
