Niky: What kind of car did you dive? KIA is the first I've seen using LEds. Did you get a chance to see what the back of the lights looked like?

I rather they are physically mounted with screws, bolts, brackets with plenty of surface area for cooling on the back side.
Now some of the leds on ebay are done with hot glue thats used for crafts and scrap booking.

As in the pic, an Accord.
Not really. The light projectors were tiny... about a third smaller in diameter than most HID projectors, and they seemed to be mounted on stalks... wish I had more time to examine them.

Acura has two models now with LED headlights. They're a spider-eye looking arrangement of multiple LED's, each with its own lens.

Even more interesting. New Corolla (here) is getting LED headlights on the top-of-the-line model.
Which means more future sources of OEM lenses and assemblies for future DIYers.

I can't confirm it yet, but some reports from the auto show are saying the new F150 gets LED headlights. Probably optional and not standard. That's huge, seeing as it's the top-selling vehicle in the country.

It may be more to distinguish itself from the competition than any tangible advantage.

Audi R8s have LED headlights, but I've never seen one at night driving.
I think those Ebay LEDs aren't close to powerful enough for headlamp usage even if you could aim them, I think I couldn't find any with over 50% the lumen output of a standard halogen.

I put in some Ebay LED fog lights (H11) that claim 700 lumens output. That would be about half of OEM output. You can hardly tell if they're on. They're visible from outside, so they make good marker lights, but for illuminating the road they're useless.
Take the rated lumens with a shaker-full of salt.
Now the ones from Superbrightleds.com are good. I bought my taillights and markers and license bulbs from them, choosing the ones that matched OEM lumens, and they do match. You can take their ratings to the bank.
