The driverless truck is coming, and it’s going to automate millions of jobs | TechCrunch
Quote:
Where drivers are restricted by law from driving more than 11 hours per day without taking an 8-hour break, a driverless truck can drive nearly 24 hours per day. That means the technology would effectively double the output of the U.S. transportation network at 25 percent of the cost.
And the savings become even more significant when you account for fuel efficiency gains. The optimal cruising speed from a fuel efficiency standpoint is around 45 miles per hour, whereas truckers who are paid by the mile drive much faster. Further fuel efficiencies will be had as the self-driving fleets adopt platooning technologies, like those from Peloton Technology, allowing trucks to draft behind one another in highway trains.

Methinks that a driverless truck is very hijackable.

Roads?! Where we're going we don't need roads!
As if semis on the road did not already get annoying!
You can drive a semi 825 miles in eleven hours if you maintain 75 MPH (good luck!). A driverless semi can go 855 miles in nineteen hours maintaining 45 MPH.

Here in uk this summer they are running trials of driverless lorries. One maned lorry at front of convoy. Gov has been told this will not work on our motorway network due to lack of junctions to join and leave. Ummm soon find out whos right.

Are semis more fuel-efficient at 45 MPH? I looked around on-line and everything talked about 55 or 65 MPH, but I felt that was at least partially because everyone drove faster. I would not expect what I know about cars to correlate 100% with trucks with trailers, but don't engines become more efficient with higher load, although that is overcome by friction above 55 MPH?
