A bane is this :

bane definition - Dictionary - MSN Encarta
Quote:
1. something that causes misery: something that continually causes problems or misery
It's the bane of my life.

2. something that causes ruin: something that causes death, destruction, or ruin ( literary or archaic )

3. deadly poison: a fatal poison ( often used in combination in the names of poisonous plants )

[ Old English bana< Germanic]

the bane of somebody's existence or life somebody or something that is a constant source of trouble or annoyance
Example :

I loved these "baby moon" racing disks, but they popped off all the time, got ruined, cost me more and more $$, and so they became the bane of my existance.

In your case, I do believe that rust is your bane.

Carlos-
Could be but I was thinking it might have to be with people not having money for vacations and get aways. They ended up driving instead of flying somewhere so they spent more time in there cars then usual due to lack of funds so to speak.

But then again you know what they say about statics...

Very true. Around here, they try with bus service, but it's not an alternative -- the Kansas and MO sides have their own systems. Most "Bi-State" issues create controversy. The Metro Area is too spread out and the airport is quite a distance from most of the residential clusters. Light rail keeps coming up, but gets denied. We actually voted on it, it passed, then the council pulled the plug due to lack of funds. Power to the people!

I agree about BART -- top notch. I used it this year for work and found it much easier than trying to drive/park a car downtown. It was actually used by folks and is exactly as you described. More personal favorites are: the "Tube" in London, NYC's subway system, and DC. As far as total systems go, Montreal and Chicago make the list (especially Chi-town's connections with buses and Amtrak/Commuter-Rail). Speaking of Amtrak, the high-speed Northeast Corridor service is pretty good (Baltimore-DC-Jersey-Philly-NY-Providence-Boston).

Jacksonville is simply too spread out to have good public transit. We have buses and a monorail. The skyway only has 5 or 6 stops and only services downtown. It is very rarely used and I am sure cost a fortune to build. I hear it makes a good restroom for our local homeless population.

...unfortunately, municipalities think "profitable" and "useful" transportation are the same--they aren't.

...we've got a bus service here in Tucson, but I can't (and don't) use it because I live on the northwest side, outside the city-limits, but work on the southside, outside the city-limits (26 miles apart).

...their emphasis seems to be on "making a profit" rather than on serving the community; although, I must admit that our employer does subsidize purchase of weekly and monthly "tickets" in an effort to be seen as a "green" employer.

Sad that the local employers are having to make up for the short-comings of the local government in so many areas. Is there any wonder why so many businesses are shutting down? Government should be accommodating those businesses in an effort to thank them for bringing jobs and money to the community, if you ask me.
