A stock D15 would feel kinda underpowered for a CR-V. Unless a torbocharger would be thrown into it...

It should be thrown in. Its capable of making 250hp with a good decent amt of torque to haul that crv. But it will be up to the OP to make that decision. Once he gets taht engine in there he'll have to make the decision.

250hp out of such a small engine would sure sound kinda impressive, but a more conservative rating might be more than enought.

On a stock block as this 200hp would be enough for me.

Might have to swap front hubs if you go with a dseries tranny. The axles could be a different size.

Horsepower isn't really the concern, it's the torque and weight. The B20 puts out 130 ft/lbs while the D15B is barely hitting 100 ft/lb, and it peaks near 5300 RPM. The CR-V weights nearly 1000 lbs more than the Civic's the D15B was designed for. So the increased weight along with decreased torque equals something that is neither fun to drive or economical, even with lean burn.

If he does decide to turbo it he could probably benefit from it. Boosting these d-series motor, if tuned properly, they can gain mpg from it. It would definitely be a fun project and something to confirm and prove as the engine bay is almost similar to the ej8. The only thing I worry about that needs custom fab is the rear t-bracket. Engine harness is basicly plug and play so if he decided to go obd1 with tuning options he is good to go.

Even with the peak torque at higher RPMs, the VTEC is supposed to keep the low-end torque manageable.
