If one of the other members has already covered this one I apologize for the duplication.
It's worth a look.

...no "slighting" intended, but it sure looks like one very aerodynamic coffin to me.

It's a beautiful machine and an excellent example of a vehicle designed for ultra low drag. Nice find.

On the low-speed closed course(s)- the only place(s) it'll ever be driven- I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah, not much practicality.Although,I figure that anyone formally exposed to low drag will be forever transformed, and hopefully it will impact their behavior as a consumer after graduation.
You would have enjoyed the B'o'chum University solar car.You just walk up,open the door, get in,buckle-up and drive away.A real door-slammer.

I've been lost for a day in TrendHunter.com. Here's one thing I came back with:

This is a lift-up body like a NASCAR funnycar, just ergonomic. You could fall out of it.

We (GMHE, Hughes Aircraft Company) worked on the SolarRaycer and previewed the EV-1 before it was announced (I almost leased one).

Aerodynamics is critically important at double- (and triple-) -digit Mach numbers (rockets, missiles, etc.), where dynamic forces will "fold" a body in half if not approached properly.

+1 on "train'em young"

That would be the 'candy store' experience for many.
For AutoWeek Magazine,Paul MacCready made mention that SolarRaycer, with a modest I.C.power-plant and drivetrain, would be capable of 400 mpg at normal highway velocity.
This was some of the grist which led me to the 'Template.'
One just doesn't ignore numbers like that!
