I decided, now that the cold weather is approaching, that I am going to ecomod my house. The office extension is always cold in winter and hot in summer, its farthest from the furnace.I suspect they used less insulation during construction. I am going to start by installing another layer of fiberglass in the attic.

Yup, everything that applys to your car, applys to your home. Grill blocking the grills in the crawl spaces, smoothing over the windows with weather stripping and doors, putting a piece of insulation over the attic opening, insulation over and under your living spaces. A timer to cycle your hot water heater to the time when its most needed as well as turning down the temp on it. Setting your hvac for a lower temp and making sure the filter is clean.

yup, started it last year when we purchased our place. First thing I did was put down an extra 6" of insulation (R-19) in the attic. A few weeks ago a insulated the attic access panel. Made it a system that has two layers of insulation to reflect the effective thickness of the rest of the attic.

Furance has a cold air intake, just changed the filter. A timer control on the water heater is a good idea. Or switch to one of those continuous water heaters, but I haven't checked on prices though.

I would like to make a humidifier from the waste heat of the 85% afue furnace. I was looking on craigs list for insulation. Anyone have geothermal?

I added a layer of r25 to the attic, it was harder than I thought getting to the corners. I found a piece of wall insulation, it looks like the stupids used R11 for the walls.

What's the best way to add insulation to exterior walls?

I had my exterior walls pumped full of insulation,2x4 walls = r13 I think it made a big diff. in the heating of my home, NOTE that put some 500 2-3 in holes on the inside ! I had a drywall man fill them and texture the walls for 500 bucks ,not too bad on cost. I also went with r38 ceiling insulation ca. required when you do a remodel. I have a raised foundation and will do the floor this winter cooler working conditions.

I just finished putting cold air intake to the furnace. Taking intake air from the attic. The exhaust flue has a fan, so it doesn't rely on natural draft.

get a filter on that attic makeup air and filter out all the sh-t ,depending on how old the house is you could have asbestos, rat,mouse sh-t alot of bad stuff
