Chances are the gear is machined into the shaft and you won't be able to just remove it. To find that out you can pop the cover off the end of the transmission (closest the driver's side wheel) and take a peek.

When the clutch on my Echo will be replaced in the foreseeable future, I will definitely look into swapping the 5th gear for lower revs on the highway.

I will be following this thread closely and contribute in any way that I can.

with a manual trans you can put it in 5th (ignition off) and roll it forward one tire revolution and note how many degrees the engine turned (or vice versa) and figure out the overall ratio for any gear that way. Might take a little bumping/rocking, but it can be done by hand and quickly.

See if this helps. I think the best tranny is in a Japan only version. I looked it up when I had my Echo, which was about 2600 RPM at 60 MPH, sadly.

i found my tranny:Toyota C transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and the tercel tranny is just after and its says what y was saying before
but its not only the tercel that the fift gear is 0.725 maybe the toyota owner can take a look at this page and find if they have a 0.725 fift gear and then tell me what are their rpm at 50 55 or 60 mph and i will compare

Question is, are the 5th gears interchangeable between the C150 and C151 transmissions ?

I must admit that a lower RPM in 5th gear would provide an even better fuel economy.
