Why don't you consider swapping a C160 six-speed transmission into your Echo?

I have either the C50 or C150 transmission in my Scion xB, but it's handicapped by the lowest final drive gear ratio in the Toyota/Scion lineup. I'm thinking of swapping the pinion and ring gears from a Yaris or Echo into my xB's differential.

There is way too much work involved in custom-fitting (frame needs to be cut and re-welded) it on an Echo.

As per this thread

(My 6 Speed conversion Thread - DIY Section - yarisfans - Toyota YarisFans: The Echo and Yaris Fans Community)

the 6-speed conversion was 350 RPM higher at 100 km/h than the 5-speed tranny.

My xB ran 3200 rpm @ 60 mph. I went to 5% taller tires, so now my engine turns 3000 rpm at 60 mph. It's still far too fast compared to your echo.

Guys, the C151 95-00 Tercel tranny should bolt in and have OBD 2 sensor fittings for passive cylinder balance measurement (part of OBD2 diagnostics- sensor counts flywheel ring gear teeth for comparison of cylinder forces).

5th gear
.725
Differential
3.250
With 24 inch diameter tires that's 840 revolutions per mile.
Works out to 1983 RPM at 60 MPH.
Same ratio as the European diesel Yaris.
You can probably pick up one of those trannies at a U-pull salvage yard cheap. Even if you have to swap the cases and transfer the guts it is fairly easy.
Might have to pick up a whacked Echo cheap. That ought to give you 55 MPG highway at 60 with no hypermiling.

regards
Mech

I have an xB as well- and was very disappointed with the ratios... I am lookin for some options for when I eventually have to do the clutch (I now have ~160k on it). What would be easiest/ make the most sense?

From a gearing standpoint, MT xB users should look at a differential ring and pinion swap, for the Yaris's 3.25 final drive ratio v. the xB's 4.31. That brings our rpm @ 60 mph down to 2334 from 3096 with the stock tires. The 5th gear swap to .725 from our .82 only drops our 60 mph cruising rpm from 3096 to 2738 with the stock 4.31 differential.

That gearing swap is going to require some major rethinking, as each gear will feel like the one above it used to feel. Second gear will have the shift points that third used to have. Third will be like fourth used to be, etc.
