eClutch: manual transmission in a Hybrid
This is interesting:
Green Car Congress: Bosch eClutch enables stop-and-go driving with manual transmission without driver engaging clutch
Quote:
Bosch’s electronically controlled eClutch allows drivers of cars with a manual transmission to use first gear in stop-and-go traffic without engaging the clutch. If the powertrain is electrified, the electronically controlled clutch means that a combination of hybrid powertrain and manual transmission is now possible.
Up to now, it has only been possible to combine a hybrid powertrain with an automatic transmission, since it is not possible to coordinate a combustion engine and an electrical powertrain using a merely manual transmission. In this respect, the eClutch offers two advantages, Bosch says: (1) a manual transmission is possible in hybrid vehicles, and (2) the price of entry-level hybrids can be reduced, since a fully automatic transmission is no longer necessary.

What about the 1st gen Insight, HCH1, etc? They are manual transmission hybrids and are available since 2000.

Also, the 2003-2005 Civic Hybrid comes in manual.

They might be referring to a hybrid powertrain that can run on electric only. The first gen HCH and insight cannot operate only on electric power like a Prius, or at least that is what I understand.

Honda CRZ, too. I do not know about the electric only, though.

And there was much rejoicing.
Is Honda changing their system to enable electric-only driving?

It's a little bit like the VW Autostick of the early '70s; that had a vacuum actuated clutch and a microswitch in the shift lever activated it.

That might make hybrids stop being perceived as something less manly

Under certain conditions my HCH with the manual will operate in EV mode. The IMA will power the entire drivetrain including backdriving the engine, which is turning in an unpowered state. No spark, no fuel.
It won't do it under any significant load, but it will do it. Slight downgrades at very modest speeds, I can see as much as a half-mile of EV-only operation.
Bosch's facts are wrong. They might have some merit in the current climate, if there is an absence of manny-tranny hybrids on the market (anyone?), but not historically.
