Back to the thread title:
Yes, we should be reducing our total fuel consumption. I have found that altering my habits and routes, which reduce my total miles driven, have had a bigger impact than better mpg in reducing my total yearly fuel consumption. In the last ten years, I've reduced my yearly gasoline consumption from over 1100 gallons a year to less than 350, mostly by figuring out how to get things done and have an enjoyable life with less driving. With my new, more efficient truck, I should get it under 300 or even 250 gallons per year in the future.
Getting rid of my lawnmower, weedwacker, gas chain saw, etc., have also helped a little. I no longer have a grass lawn. It is mostly food plants, native plants, or mulch, with the mulch slowly being taken over by the former two.
