So we're not calling them "hybrids" anymore?

The new Chevy Malibu has some sort of energy gain system for downhills - it sounds like a mild hybrid that uses the alternator to slow the car and charge the battery?

Mercedes has had lin bus controlled alternators for years. It trys to only charge the normal car battery when you are decelerating. I don't like it because the programming always leaves the battery at 80% to make sure there is "room" to add more if you do slow down. We have to use a 50 amp charger every time we have the key on/ engine off for diagnostics because the voltage of the 100 amp hour battery will drop to 11,5V immediately.

I live in Austin and had the pleasure of attending the race when they came to America this season, it was amazing. When I first heard about them using diesel I was happy yet disappointed. My question is. Will these engines be able to hit 18,000 rpm like the gasoline ones? Surely the new standards will revolutionize the potential of fuel economy and power for cars on the streets which wil be awesome

Diesel in F1? Not that I've heard. The 2014 V6's will be limited to 15,000RPM.

The Austin track is instantly one of my favorite tracks.

KERS already takes over a bunch of the braking duties- if they don't discharge it fully, their brakes won't perform as needed because they're depending on the added drag of the recharging. Why anyone would be dumb enough to leave that power sitting on the table every lap is beynd me, but every once in a while there's a radio transmission reminding a driver to fully discharge it.

It will be interesting to see how KERS is utilized next year. With double the KERS boost on tap (160 HP) and 20 sec/lap instead of 7, it will be difficult for drivers to use it to its full potential, which has me wondering it will be automatic, based on the telemetry, track position, etc.

Too bad the technology is more exciting than the racing.
