All I found on the trans is P4A A000 95. From what I have read, it is very hard to determine if it is a CX, VX, DX, or LX trans. The easiest way is to count the teeth. I guess I might do that if I get bored and fell like cracking it open.

Is the trans in the car or out? If it's out, you can put it in 5th, hold one output flange still, and turn the input shaft. Turn it through X number of degrees and crunch the math on how far the output should move from the gear ratio and ring and pinion ratio. And double that because of the differential.

The CX trans is out of the car. It needs rebuilt anyways, might as well just open it up and count the teeth. I will check also with a local expert too. All my googling points to a "Mista Bone" as a D series tranny expert. Suprisingly I used to post on a local message board with him 15 years ago and I am pretty sure he still lives in Cincinnati. Time to drop him a note.

He is also quite active on the CRX Community website (CRX Community Forum). And he, unlike some of the other "performance" folks out there, is sympathetic to those trying to get better MPG out of their cars. (Though he does have a few funny ideas about how to achieve that.)

***Trans update***

Still looking for a definate answer on this, but I am finding sources stating the 96-00 CX is different than the LX/DX trans. They also state the HX manual trans is more similar to the EX/SI trans, but is also different.

96-00 CX and HX have the same ratios, 3.722 FD, HX has the larger bearing case like the EX.
