I would accept a $500 parts Prius, but do you think it would make the drive?
Also, it is bizarre they seemed to take great care of it, except for rustproofing! How much would you say it would be worth if they rustproofed as well as they took care of everything else?

It's funny - I was wondering the same thing.
I bet if this car had a current safety inspection, it'd be pretty easy to sell for ~$1800.
A thorough professional rustproofing costs about $150 here. If you did it every other year starting after about 5 or 6 years from new (the factory paint/rustproofing will easily last that long), you'd have done 4 or 5 treatments by now on a 2004 model year. So let's say $750 invested in anti-rust treatments over 10 years.
(Of course you could DIY it for about 20% of that cost using a non-toxic spray. Or free if you want to slosh used motor oil everywhere! Some people do that.)
So he woulld have been ahead of the game: $1800 less $750 = $1050, rather than ~$500 for a car that's so rusty it's only good for parts.
Not to mention one less car going to the junkyard prematurely.

I will admit I also searched today for any 04-09 Prii around here that had busted drivetrains or batteries... to put 2 cheap parts cars together. Nada.
One guy is asking $1500 for an '04 with 500,000 km on it (=300k mi) because "that's what the battery is worth." Nuh-uh!

If it is the original battery, I read it is only worth $250!

This is more a Hall of Shame entry than anything else, a 2001 Prius with 146,200 miles for $1,700. It just needs a new ball joint and a traction battery!
I would not pay seventeen hundred for a 2001 in perfect mechanical shape.
Would you?

Is this the definition of irony? I'm never quite sure I get it right...
Found out this evening that a friend of a friend traded in her immaculate, relatively low-kilometers '08 Prius for peanuts a couple of weeks ago because the "transmission went".
There went an ideal candidate for drivetrain parts from the cheap rusted one I looked at.

I was just given right of first refusal on a Metro XFi for $1000, available 'soon'. New tires and timing belt.
I drove it as a loaner a few years back and got my personal best fuel mileage with it. Later today I'm going to call him up and offer to trade the Dasher diesel.

You guys want to see something funny? :)
2001 Prius for $2,000. Two hundred and eighty-six thousand miles, zero good pictures, and you cannot test drive it or drive it away because while the traction battery is allegedly good (for now), the 12v battery is dead!
Should I offer them $500?
