Anyone ever hear of unbelting the alternator and water pump and using the alternator as a brushless DC motor to power the water pump?

At the very least it would require a 3 phase variable frequency drive.
Then you would have to hack the alternator apart kind of like I did for my schotty diode alternator mod. Then any efficiency gained by going 3 phase would be wasted by having to magnetize the rotor. The only time I have seen 3 phase motors with externally magnetized rotors is very specific applications where the rotor had to be locked unison with the frequency driving it because for that application there had to be 0 rotor slip. The only time I ever saw motors like this was on old school rotary frequency converters that converted 50Hz power to 400Hz power.
The VFD alone would cost at least as much as 1 or 2 of very expensive Meziere coolant pumps.

Your best options for going to electric coolant pump are find an electric motor like Daox to drive the coolant pump or find a universal fit already made electric coolant pump kind of like what I did.

I have another application for this. I have decided to do inter compressor stage cooling on my twin turbo diesel. Right now the T76 discharges air directly into the HE351VE intake. I am going to stick a large 3.5 inch in/out air to water intercooler in place of the simple U shaped piping.
To keep hours off the pump and save power because these pumps draw up to 7 amps and can run all the time I am considering keeping the pump off when interstage air temperatures are below 100'F to 120'F, then once the temperature switch is made run the pump on low until some where between 6 to 9psi of manifold boost are obtained. Then above cruise boost (5 to 6PSI) I would like the pump to kick on full speed.
