NOOOOO... dont take it that way! LOL. I meant nothing of the sort, in fact, I was referring to the guy driving the Olds 350 rocket around like it's still the fastest thing on the street, or the guy who has a '86 Volvo/White D350 Cab-Over w/ a Cat400T and a 19 speed road ranger w/ 2speed splitter for a DD, calling 10MPG GREAT MILEAGE... that kind of guy.
You're an eco-modder... no reason to say such things about you! But, as always, if the shoe fits... :P

Well the second one is actually a big-truck.. so that was kind of cheating, but if you've got that for a DD, you need help anyway, considering that the rear frame section of that truck is long enough to hold a Geo Metro and a half, and the body section w/o the sleeper is like 10FT long. The whole truck is ~30Ft long, dual rear axle, dual tires on both axles, 60/40 power splitter between the rear axles, iirc.
And Cabover, if anyone doesn't know, means "flat nose" or "cab on top of engine/front axle". You've all seen them... think Optimus Prime from Transformers. (The old TV series, not the new crap.)

Hmmm... Those words coming out of your computer make me think you know more about trucks than the average ecomodder.
My middle brother drives 3 and 4-axle dumpers that are really, really close to that description, and spends so little time actually on 4-lane blacktop that he would give his le... uh, kill to get... uh, be REALLY HAPPY if he could get 10 MPG!!!

I'm going to have to chime in with a professional opinion. I have been an Industrial Hygienist for the past 25 years, and it is has been my profession to insure that workers are not harmed by the chemicals they use in the workplace.
First, xylene is in fact the chemical name, not a brand name.
Second, although it is important to work safely with all chemicals and to use appropriate protective gear, it is also important not to go overboard on the fright thing. Long-term exposures to xylene and toluene are hazardous, but these chemicals are not as acutely hazardous as they are being painted here. Serious central nervous system damage will not occur with "very little exposure". It takes years of frequent or prolonged over-exposures for that to happen. Also, just splashing some on your skin will not cause burns, and NEVER use another chemical (even alcohol) to wash yourself with. Use water only. Employees who do things like that are the bane of Industrial Hygienists.
Basically you will be safe working with xylene or toluene if you: - work in a well-ventilated area
- don't repeatedly spill them on your skin or clothing
- do not ingest them
- work with them only occasionally
- wear eye protection for splashes
There is one exception: do not let any pregnant females near the area where they are being used. They are both known to cause birth defects in women.
They are also suspected carcinogens. They are not strong carcinogens so don't panic, but it is simply a good idea to avoid skin contact whenever possible. But it isn't necessary to put on a moon-suit or wear rubber aprons or elbow length gloves. Also, I have to correct Christ - nitrile and neoprene are not appropriate glove materials for use with xylene or toluene.
The problem with going overboard with protective equipment recommendations is that many people will just say "Oh, the heck with it", and not even use minimal protection. Also, if you treat routine chemicals like they are highly hazardous agents you are not likely to pay special attention when you DO work with a serious chemical.

And now I have to correct you. Nitrile is the ONLY glove out of Latex, Neoprene, Nitrile, or Vinyl that works "Fair" in Xylene, on a scale of "Excellent", "Good", "Fair", "Poor". The other three glove types are "Poor". Toluene is "Poor" in all four glove types and will break them down in a relatively short period of time.
My experience is I work in a lab that uses all these chemicals and have the safety portion of our jobs beaten into our heads .

I did a little tinkering a few years ago, tank swaps, motor swaps, re-gearing trannys and axles, etc... paid the rent.

I had to listen to that EVERY DAY on an audio tape before I was allowed to sign anything out of the Chem Lab in high school.
Thanks for reminding me
Oh, ChemLab is responsible for me putting signs on every source of water in the school too:
WARNING!
Do not drink this water! It has been found to contain a chemical known as dihydrogen monoxide.

Yeah, I still can't believe that I was the only one in my English Composition class (even though I hadn't heard of it as yet) who was able to figure out within a few seconds what the professor was talking about... and most of the students were Pre-Med!
