But I can think of at least one reason why helmets should be mandatory. Imagine you're driving your car and you hit a motorcyclist. If he had a helmet on, then he's got a few broken limbs and a mild concussion. If he didn't, then he's dead. It may have been his fault, it may have been yours. Either way, someone died and you had a part in it. Maybe you killed an idiot, but you've got a human being on your conscience.
I wonder if Darwin would have stumbled upon natural selection had he been surrounded by helmets, Hummers and airbags?
The only people that wear a helmet because they want to are those who have something to protect.

Do you wear a bullet proof vest? Should you have to pay more, by law, for not wearing a bullet proof vest?

Following your argument to its logical conclusion, why do I have to wear a seat belt in my car or on an airplane? For that matter, whats up with all the safety equipment on airplanes? Imagine how much cheaper flying could be if your airliner only had 1 engine, no backup avionics and the pilots learned to fly by reading the back of a cereal box. Sounds like life, liberty, and the pursuit of bureaucracy to me.
Oh yeah, how about those pesky child proof drug containers, lead free paint, lead free gasoline, the ban on DDT. And why the hell do I have to keep a functioning catalytic converter on my damn car? If i want poison my body, my environment and my neighbors, who is the government to tell me what not to do?

nice fear mongering TJ. You completely went off the rails with the childproof caps. We are talking about adults making decisions for themselves. Make drivers drive better before blaming the victims.

Let those who ride, decide.
As long as they also pay for those decisions, in the form of higher insurance rates etc.

should you pay more health insurance, by law, if you aren't wearing a condom?

Retraining young men (who make up a majority of motorcyclists) to walk, talk, and feed themselves is VERY expensive.
Get used to it -- we need to have rules that benefit society and/or limit stupid behavior. That is why we formed a country. Everybody should keep their cars in safe operating order without inspections, and everybody should buy insurance to protect themselves without being told to by the government -- but they don't...

I don't know why all these cagers are mouthing off on bikers. Turn in your dam cellphones if you really give a crap. Don't hit motorcycles and cut them off and run them over, hows that for brilliant?
If you don't ride, you can just shut the hell up, because you are completely igorant as to how bad drivers (and a few cyclists) really are, which is the main problem. Your car isn't made out of foam rubber? you should pay, now!

As a person who has ridden in the past (still can but choose not to) I say let them choose. I am all for less government restrictions on my life. Give people the facts and let them choose.
Then they can pay for there own consequences.

I don't like wearing helmets on motorcycles (or bicycles) and I don't even like wearing seat belts because I was *raised* without them. But I don't have a logical argument against them.
