'speed holes'

So far, I consider the so-called 'speed holes' an oxymoron. More a cheeze-grater dive-brake, than some drag reducing feature.
'Whiffle-Ball'
And come to think about it, Pete Brock's Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe 'had' these 'ducts' but they were left completely blanked off for some unpublished reason.

I intended 'speed holes' somewhat ironically.

Semi-permeable membrane? Better?

Still, side or rear facing?

That works!
Historically, for low-drag, one would skip as much body porosity as possible. And absolutely in the aft-body. So that rules out the sides.
Narrow the body as much as possible, while maintaining attached flow. Use every millimeter of body length for pressure regain, high base pressure.
But until we've buried all the 'Paris Dressmakers', they're still gonna want 'wheel styling', so fewer 'skirts' which would render them obsolete.
Rear-facing could definitely be part of your forced-air, Coanda-nozzle effect pressure injection into the wake; if we could master the energy required to power the necessary air mover.

Most cars produced today have this solution. And it all started from Toyota.

BMW doesn't even take design into account anymore, they add them to all cars. Even if it looks like hell.

Toyota has been using this solution since 2012.

Toyota changed design on the same car right after facelift))

I have that car.

P.S. That was just a visual design, there were no vents actually.
While I see that all Hyundais (even not-ioniq) have vents at least in front bumper.

No one said that the separation traps are vents.

Yes, they came to the conclusion that they come out cheaper in the new way.
And most car manufacturers have also modified the design in this direction.
