If this is what happens when you get them wet, I'd hate to see what happens when you feed them after midnight!!

It all fits with water and Lithium though.
It is extremely rare for a car that's just been submerged, i.e. soaking wet, to catch fire ...
Even a single laptop with a Li-ion battery in a burning car will have a spectacular effect , well beyond the gas tank going off.
Water only makes it worse, but the FD can't see wether there's such a laptop in a car .
FDs here are buying and carrying more D-powder fire extinguishers on their vehicles.

As much as I would sincerely like to see them succeed, the awful truth is they are fodder for even car guys like Leno to get a laugh from!

Here is the follow up:
Sandy Flood Fire Followup: Fisker Karma Battery Not At Fault
Quote:
In a statement last night, the company said it has concluded--after "a thorough investigation witnessed by NHTSA representatives"--that the cause was residual salt damage inside a Vehicle Control Unit submerged in seawater for several hours.
Corrosion from the salt caused a short circuit in the unit, which led to a fire when the Karma's 12-Volt battery fed power into the circuit.
Heavy winds then spread that fire to other Karmas parked nearby. But, the factory said, there were no explosions, as had been incorrectly reported.

I actually like the design of the Fisker Karma and the RWD layout, but I've always considered its hybrid system too oppulent and quite dumb, since a smaller engine could perform the same job easily considering it's used just as a generator. Instead of the 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec the 1.4L one used in the Chevy Cruze and the Sonic would be enought, or even the N/A 8-valve one used in the Volt.
