FREE! 2008 Toyota Prius Mint Green Turtle

Recently picked up a 2008 Toyota Prius. Girl my wife works with drove it to work and she couldn't start it again. Sat for a few days at her work before she decided it was time to get rid of it. Mentioned to my wife that she was going to have it towed off to the junkyard after work. Curious, my wife asked what kind of car. '08 Prius. Ok, what's wrong with it? Drove it to work and now it won't start. Tried to jump start it, but the gas motor wouldn't turn on and the hybrid battery was on the low end. Wife messaged me and said to come take a look at it. Not the prettiest, but I might be able to do something with it. Said we'd take it for free and save her from having to tow it. Got the title signed over and paid $50 to tow the Prius home here in town. Put it on charge but still wouldn't go. Noticed that the fuel light was flashing but thought, no way. It can't be that easy. Sure enough though, it was. Added $10 in gas and it started right up!

The girl did message later saying she never would have got rid of it had she known that's all that it needed. So, we did wind up giving her $200 for it. No complaints though, the car is well worth it. She was happy with getting something.

Now, it's not perfect. Far from perfect. There was a huge dent in the front passenger side of the front bumper. Pulled it off, banged it out as best I could. The impact also bent up some of the apron where the light mounts to. Bent those best I could too. All 3 of the mounting tabs for the passenger light were broke off. So, Guerrilla glued one on and drilled holes through the rest. Bolted one down and zip tied the rest in good.

So far replacement parts have been:
Drivers side wheel bearing $30
HID to LED conversion lights $20
Smog Check (CA) $70
Title and plate transfer DMV $30
Rear View Mirror $50
Floor mats $10
Batman Sticker (Rear trunk Emblem gone) $5
Fuse and Relay Box plastic covers (eBay) $40

All totaled less than $500 invested so far. Think tires might be needed soon, pulls right. Swap tires from side to side and see if it then pulls left. Wanted a Prius for a while, glad I finally got one.

Well, that was the first problem that was fixed. The auxiliary battery was also drained. She also had to add 2 quarts of oil in there, odd because it doesn't leak. Now, don't get me wrong. This car when I got it was a worst case scenario. Teenage girl driver who used the car as a rolling trash can and obviously neglected it. Said she hadn't driven it much since getting a DUI then getting her license back. Still smells of funk. Got some $8 ebay drill brushes to scrub the floors and seats on their way. Still need to get a wet rag then clean every compartment and cup holder sludge build up area. It's not pretty or perfect but it was cheap.

These Priuses are known to burn oil commonly. Keep an eye on oil level.

Walmart sells these brushes for $2.88, but I found some at the dollar store:

I removed the top, put a bolt through the bottom, and fastened it with a washer and nut. Whenever I really need to scrub something I grab my brush that cost just over a dollar.

Cool. Thanks! Looked for one of those brushes at a Oreilly's but they didn't have any. They did have my rear view mirror adhesive packet so it wasn't a wasted trip. Ordered some drill bit brushes off eBay that come in a 3 pack set for $8. Don't think the girl ever cleaned it.

Funny you should mention that. Recently watched a video where a mechanic listed his previous vehicles. So, listed all mine out too on a FB post to remember them. Here's what I came up with.

1. 1986 Pontiac Sunbird 4 door - not very exciting, just drove it as cheap transportation
2. 1987 Pontiac Firebird 2.8 liter automatic. Fun, but slow. T-tops. Took it to Carb day in Indianapolis on Senior Skip day
3. 1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 Air Induction. Kept that car for years. T-Tops, 350, the first car I modified for speed
4. 1986 Pontiac Grand Am. Got it for a girlfriend at the time because, sometimes you do dumb things when you're young.
5. 1988 Nissan pick up. Burnt up the clutch learning how to drive a manual transmission. Spent forever getting fixed then sold it.
6. 1978 AMC Matador Station wagon. What a hooptie. But we drove it to a Grateful Dead concert and had a blast with the 360 V8
7. 1986 Nissan pickup. Total POS. Ran like crap. Had a stripped out spark plug thread. Bought for $50 and sold for $100
8. 1978 Pontiac Trans Am Black, T-tops, Had some issues but was a fun driver. 400 Pontiac / Auto Was kind of a beater though.
9. 1979 Pontiac Trans Am Gold colored. Nice car. Was a lot of fun to drive. 403 Olds / Auto
10. 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Winter Rust bucket beater 305 / Auto
11. 1986 Buick Century 4 door. Had to hold the starter in place while someone else started it.
12. 1987 Ford Econoline Van. 302 / auto. Beat up outside but inside was plush. Traded this and the 79 Gold T/A for the next...
13. 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1 351 / Auto Sweet Car. Loved it, so many memories with my friend Randy with that car.
14. 1988 Mitsubishi Mighty Max pick up. Nice truck but didn't keep it long.
15. 1986 Dodge Omni. Multi colored & pieced together. Another hooptie
16. 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis. Rear floorboards rusted through. Had a wooden bumper from where the original rusted off.
17. 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Rusty Primer paint but had the 350 Rocket engine
18. 1991 Buick Park Avenue. Really nice car! But didn't keep it long either
19. 1991 Pontiac Sunbird. Red 2 door
20. 1993 Chevrolet Lumina 4 door Drove it to Myrtle Beach for vacation once.
21. 1987 Subaru 4 door Wagon. Amazing car in the snow, all wheel drive.
22. 1991 Lincoln Town Car. Previous owner put head gaskets on the 3.8. Nice luxury car
23. 1987 Chevrolet Blazer 2 door
24. 1983 Datsun 280 ZX Turbo t-tops. Fun car when it ran which wasn't often.
25. 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1. Dropped a 400 down in there and it was a beast.
26. 1969 Chevrolet C-10 Pick up. Inline 250 6 with a 3 on the tree manual trans. One of my favorite trucks of all time.
27. 1979 Ford Extended Cab F-250 460 / C6. Broke down hundreds of miles from home and had to tow it back with....

31. 1987 Dodge Daytona 2.2 liter auto, sold it to my neighbor who also needed a car.
32. 1987 Dodge Daytona Turbo 5 speed. Now this car felt fast! Think the waste gate stuck making it go full boost.

34. 1976 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28. Got it from a guy I worked for, sold it quick, wasn't my style

42. 1976 Ford F 350 with the 460 / C6 Had amazing low end torque but would scream at high rpm at highway speeds.
43. 1982 Ford F 150 Kept running across cheap Ford trucks that I could pass up for the price. Drive for a month or two then sell.
44. 1987 Lincoln Town Car. Had some title issues but finally got it all straight. Back & forth from the DMV isn't fun.
45. 1970 Ford Torino Brougham. Nice and very little to no rust. Pulled the 302 and put in a 351 Cleveland from the next car.
46. 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Had a nice 351 Cleveland and trans to go in the Torino above.
47. 1970 Ford Torino GT I traded #44 to get this. Used it for parts to modify the looks of #45 Sold the 351 Windsor in it.
