Since most of us are driving older vehicles, I'll ramble on in that direction.
As injectors get old, the get dirty, clogged up with the various stuff that's in gasoline. It alters the spray pattern and flow rates. The change in flow rates aren't always equal between the injectors. That means an imbalance charge between cylinders and a less efficient burn.
The closed loop system that uses an oxygen sensor for feedback only measures the total air fuel ratio. If one cylinder is +5% and another is -5%, the computer will never know.
I suspect that cleaning the stock fuel injectors would nearly identical results as buying these upgrades. Some shops keep a large inventory and will send back flow tested and matched injectors. Factory injectors can vary quite a bit, even when new.
