I just hate front wheel drive. I think id rather drive a rear driver running on one cylinder than a front driver with a twin charged engine.

From watching my instant fuel mileage calculator on my dash and braking even less, I've improved my fuel consumption in my outback by about 2mpg.

Front wheel drive little four banger with 4 studded snow tires is pretty much the way to go in dry Colorado snow. When it gets to be slush, I'd rather be in a truck.

from reading those 101 tips, its very interesting to learn i already do many of those and have no idea they help a bit. like pulling into a parking spot so you can drive away instantly, its just easier that way.

To continue with what redpoint said, yes the defrost usually runs the AC compressor. I just found out that my Focus is auto AC when selecting defrost, but also found out that there is a plug on the selector knob that can be unplugged and deactivate that feature. Usually the dry air isn't completely needed and her car should still have an AC switch that can activate the compressor for the initial clearing. I've never run the AC on defrost on my other cars and never thought I needed it to perform better.

You could probably pick up an MPG or two by removing the basket when you're not using it. Depending on how often it might be worth even trying to get a quick detach system going.

Also, hello fellow outback.org member.

when i first got the rack i took it off whenever i didn't use it for camping. but now that i added an extension to the rack and the light bar, its just a major pain in the ass. that rack is the main reason my mileage went way down. yeah, ive seen you on there.
