Personally, I see disabling the regen as potentially sacrificing energy. As we know, driving is very dynamic, and having to brake is very often unintentional for anybody with a focus on hypermiling - but unavoidable in entirety.
I try to just decelerate my i3 with the flow meter showing net zero power, and the car can glide an amazingly long distance that way, but as reality creeps in, eventually I need to scrub that energy, and losing it to the brakes is the last option I exercise.
I can turn off regeneration through a hidden 'roller mode' menu option, but I think the tradeoff in unplanned braking eliminates the benefit I can get from it.
