Golf SE 2.0 TDI 140PS 6 Spd

Hiya, just got a new VW Golf SE 2.0 TDI 140PS 6 Spd & would like to know how to get the best fuel economy out of it while looking after the engine, the torque band is 236@1750-250! Should I be trying to keep in the torque band as much as possible? Currently running at 56mph at around 1700-1750 on the motorway! Ta for any help!

Diesels: keep 'em below 2000 rpm.
And a grille block, since diesels take a while to warm up.

Does the new Golf have onboard, resettable fuel consumption display? Using that, and religiously logging every fill up is the foundation of figuring out how you're doing and whether you're improving or not.

I imagine you'd be getting really good fuel economy at moderate speeds like that.

You may find that cruising at 68-72 may yeild better results - I know that sounds counter productive but you should only have to to use the weight of your foot to sustain it. Most modern dubs are set-up to cruise at 130kph, the legal limit in most european countries and the rain/junction limit im Deutscheland.

do you mainly drive on motorways or backroads? as from experience with bruv's 140tdi they are great a-to-b cars on minor roads

I’ll try cruising at 68-72 in 6th gear thanks; I’ve been running at 56mph in 5th gear! I use mostly motorways, travelling to work down in Northwhich, if I think the motorways gona be busy I’ll use the A roads!
