HAI (Hot Air Intake) for Toyota Corolla, Matrix and Pontiac Vibe? 1ZZ-FE engines

I'd like to make a "go to" on everything related to doing a HAI
(Hot Air Intake)

here are the cars sharing the same platform/engine that this applies to..

Toyota Corolla 1.8 1ZZ-FE (2003-2008) 9th Gen
Toyota Matrix 1.8 1ZZ-FE (2003-2008) 1st Gen
Pontiac Vibe 1.8 1ZZ-FE (2003-2008) 1st Gen

All are on the same platform, but the Pontiac Vibe was available in an AWD setup..

Upon inspection of the bottom half of the air box (pre-filter) on the Corolla,
the area surface of the airbox is pretty small to modify for a heater duct tubing setup.
There are also few obstructions for routing to the exhaust manifold (firewall side of engine)

This setup is nothing like the HAI I did on my 02 Tacoma 2.4 truck..
http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...akes-7602.html

My mileage has dropped quite a bit since the winter blend of fuel
kicked in and the IAT's (Incoming Air Temperature) are a bit cold..
I have my ScanguageII mounted in my Corolla now because I did my grill
block and wanted to see where my baseline temps sit before blocking it off..

Today I fished one of those aluminum flexible 4" drier tubing hoses through and just have it sitting on the exhaust manifold, its connected to the inlet just by the battery (in front of it).. just a temp fix for now.. had it laying around..

On average the unmodded engines IAT sits about 2-4 degree's over what the instrument clusters outside temps are reading.
After the quick mod, I'm seeing only about 15 degree's more than the outside temps.. Not quite enough..

In 20 below zero temps, my truck would see 80+ degree temps with that HAI setup..

I need ideas..

Here's what I'm workin with.. (not my picture, but same)

If you have done an Hot Air Intake setup on these cars, please share your pictures, info and anything that could help.. I found a lot of 8th generation Corolla's modded for HAI, but nothing is the same under the hood..

Thanks for looking!

Thanks, but that engine/underhood setup is quite a bit different..
I don't have the hood clearance to do something like that..

I have updated this thread to include other models on the same platform to hopefully make this a "go to" for these vehicles..

The conclusion from WAI testing on my 1NZ-FE engine is that it doesn't improve fuel economy. Reading the referenced thread may save you a lot of effort.

You don't live in a cold enough climate for it to make much of a difference..
When you get closer to the 20's on winter blend fuel, you'll see your fe drop fast..

On average in 60 degree weather, 36mpg without effort..
On average in 20 degree weather, 31mpg without effort.. No snow at the time..

On my truck when driving from Modesto to East Oakland each day,
my FE went up after doing my deckplate HAI setup with no other mods at the time.

Isn't your cars platform Echo based? Or shares the same engine/drive train?

I have noticed that the fuel consumption at idle, when the engine is fully warmed, stays relatively the same regardless of the IAT. It hovers at 0.14-0.15 GPH (gallons per hour), at around 650 RPM.

I wonder if such observation can help us understand why MAF systems do not seem to benefit from a WAI/HAI.

I might do some tests on my side and report back if you wish (it gets pretty cold here.)
