I think this site is one reason I have a TDI Jetta. In fact, I'm sitting in it now. Happy Belated Birthday, Eco!

I love it and have been able to squeeze upwards of 54mpg on winter diesel and snow tires. Thank you so much for the great info here.

Hey could you share how you did the methanol? I've got the same car and I'm only getting 37mpg and you've got me intrigued! My tune has a lot to do with it though. Snow tires did have me near 48-50 when I bought it though ....

Yay happy birthday! Still building a CRX to get 50mpg+ while pushing 500whp in the same chassis... gotta sell an S2000 and a Mazda5 first, then replace with a BRZ.

HDB EM! I just had to cruise on by for a tip of the ol' hat even though I'm no longer a regular. All the electric stuff constitutes what I see as the biggest change. I guess making electric cars more of a luxury social status item than an efficiency one, then beginning to flip the script once peoples' interest is drummed up seems like the thing to do. "The Tesla way"

TURBO ALL THE THINGS!
I am more of a lurker on this site, but here is a try. I could really use one of those pieces of technology, but cannot realistically afford them, esp since i need to replace a cat'.

Sure the presence of turbochargers have increased noticeably in the last 10 years. Even in some regional markets where naturally-aspirated Diesels were still able to meet emission requirements, such as Argentina and Uruguay, it became nearly impossible to find a brand-new naturally-aspirated Diesel in the last 5 years.
And even here in Brazil, where most people still feared turbochargers because it was perceived as a maintenance nightmare, it's not unusual to see some turbocharged versions of certain cars outselling their naturally-aspirated counterparts, to the point that some models which are still available with naturally-aspirated engines in neighboring countries became available locally only with turbocharged engines.

10 years ago I used to be quite as fanatical for the VW air-cooled engine as Torchinsky is, but now I would probably not feel so bothered by a water-cooled engine swap into a random old VW (even though the TL and the Squareback would lead to some clearance issues due to their axial cooling fan enabling the usage of a lowered trunk floor).
