Has engine on coasting caused codes for anyone?

Recently I've been doing more pulse and glide engine on and my last tank I only averaged 38 which I thought was kinda low. Its thrown two codes both being the same in the last week. I looked it up its the oxygen sensor. Which I know can decrease mpg. Has anyone else had this issue? The car only has 110k miles. Anyways I went ahead and ordered one. Hope to see my mpg jump back up.

It's almost certainly not the coasting that caused the oxygen sensor to go more likely that it was just coincidence.

Do you engine off coast? I don't think it would affect your O2 sensor either way.

Is your failing O2 sensor pre or post-catalytic converter? If it's the forward (pre-catalytic converter, then it can affect fuel economy. The second O2 sensor just measures catalytic efficiency, and isn't used to adjust air/fuel ratio.

Like others have stated, not likely related to engine on coasting. My immediate assumption is that it is a result of the car being 15 years old and only 110k miles. Perhaps the car made a lot of short "cold" trips during it's life.

Either way, good luck with the replacement. Hopefully it improves your mileage!

Engine on coasting or engine Off coasting?

For On-Coasting I haven't had any codes show up in Moony. However, when I did off-coasting and turned the van off quickly it threw off the ScanGauge II and made it act strange. I didn't get any engine codes from that though.

I can't say for the Caprice, Given the 1984 V8 engine that's in it.

If you do mean engine on coasting which I assume you do since you have an automatic do you mean just foot off the gas while in drive or foot off the gas in neutral? Either way it shouldn't cause any issues but especially if it's still in drive while it's coasting will it not ever be an issue.

Now if you're Turing the engine off on the other hand that could cause some problems, but they would be transmission related not o2 sensor problems.

02 sensors at 110k are not uncommon. Since your are getting a CEL you should see a decent improvement in mileage.

Coasting never touched my O2s, but bump starting killed my clutch at only 207,000.
