It can be done that way, either a transmission swap or an overhaul. Anyway, if you decide to swap the transmission, I'd advice you to overhaul the current one while it's removed and keep it as a spare unit.

I have swapped a transmission in the grass in the backyard with some friends with crap tools when I was 17.

If you aren't afraid of tools and getting dirty, this is probably within your reach. I understand swapping a tranny on a Civic is pretty straightforward.

Get the Haynes manual or, if you want to drop the money on it, a Factory Service Manual. Do some reading up, there are lots and lots of references in the enthusiast mags and online about guys pulling trannies. I swear, Honda guys will swap motors at the drop of the hat, like "Whaddaya wanna do? Well, it's Thursday, let's drop a D into the Civic!"

Or in the immortal words of Jeremy Clarkson, "How hard can it be?" (cue ominous thunder)

Thanks for all the input guys, i think ive decided to give it a shot. anyone know a good place to start looking for a reasonably priced tranny? i live in maine and the weather the past couple weeks has been extremely harsh (a day or 2 ago we broke the record low of -23 f) ill im just going to baby it untill we thaw out or my buddy gets his **** together out of his garage so i can atleast work out of the wind. should give me plenty of time to track a new 5speed tranny down and uncover any surprises in the job by watching others do it or close to it on you tube.
