Hello from San Diego

Hello everyone. Long time EM lurker Finally signed up. I am a mechanic at an independent shop and that is how I came upon my 96 Metro. I purchased my Metro from a customer with a broken Auto Trans. I did some research and found the m/t has a 7-9mpg advantage over the a/t. After some research on metroMPG.com, teamswift, and of coarse EM, I began the hunt for a Tranny out of a SOHC swift(tallest final drive). Finding the tranny was the most difficult part of the swap. I finished the swap and have been driving conservatively and learning from my SG2. Averaging 37MPG. I want to start P&G pretty soon and plan to start doing some aero mods.

I am very interested in motorsports and power/handling but I am also married with kids. How fast you go is directly related to how much you spend. Needless to say, I wasn't going very fast. So I sold my 91 240sx when I got my metro running. I am more interested in the technical side of cars and driving technique. Thats why I find EM and metroMPG really fascinating.

I am really excited to be a part of the EM community.

Hi jonEmetro - welcome to EM!

First: great car nickname.

Second: if you're going to start doing engine-off stuff, you'll need to rig a kill switch if you want the ScanGauge to keep tracking mileage properly (because of the car's OBD-II protocol, it'll reboot every time you key-off, and you lose distance data).

I don't know how much flexibility/pressure you have with traffic in Ramona, but with engine-off coasting and/or pulse & glide (if you want to go that extreme), there's a lot more MPG to be had from your car.

Thanks guys for the warm welcome.

MetroMPG - Ya I thought something was wrong with my SG2 when it would reboot. I searched around here and found that they all do that. Thanks for the advice.

Welcome to less fuel costs, JonEmetro!

Not to discourage you in anyway, but your 1.3L is never going to achieve the numbers that a 1.0L Metro can...I have a '97 LSI 4cyl/automatic like yours was originally, and for it, 37mpg would be considered a pretty good number. However, take into account that it's un-modded and driven normally, so playing the hypermilin' game should show some benefit. Best wishes in your quest!

Hacksaw.
