I also love really basic cars. I'd love to be able to get an engine as small as a d13, but fuel injection on the d15 is better. I'd take the d 15.

I will rebuild Black and Green over decades as parts die, until it becomes a different car of roughly the same shape and color. My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.

Why a Civic? I suppose I just like them. And they come pretty close to what I want anyway.
