Cool Hi folks

I've been lurking for about a month now. I have a 98 626 4cyl/5 speed that was getting 20 mpg just two months ago. I modified my driving habits and began to get 25. Three weeks ago my AC died and broke the belt that the Power steering was also on . Next tank was 34.4 mpg, I'm halfway through the current tank and I have the same 34 ish mpg. I'm looking into an intake, high flow cat/muffler a "Home Depot Lip Kit" and I eventually plan on building a belly pan. This site has given me GREAT ideas. I'm hoping for 40+ mpg soon.

Roger

Welcome to the site. It sounds as if your well on your way to better mileage.

I would think twice about going with high flow intake and exhaust components though. If you are driving for fuel economy these items will do absolutely nothing for you and could possibly hurt your fuel economy.

I'm originally from the v8/performance crowd. A better flowing exhaust always gave me better mpg, so I would get worse fuel economy with the 4 banger Is it a backpressure issue?

Welcome to EM! How does the car steer without PS? Is it "manual steering" hard or harder?

It's not that bad, just difficult when pulling in / backing out of a parking space. On the road there is more feedback from the road (which I like ) , you just have to plan corners a little bit earlier. I'll be doing the Home Depot lip kit this weekend (air dam ) didn't have time this weekend.
