Higher output power steering pump
Does anyone know what kind of effect a performance or higher pressure power steering pump would have on fuel economy? I would be interested in installing one on my vehicle if it doesn't negatively affect my fuel economy.

Only if it pumps higher volume.

Are there any electric racks you can retrofit? I'm super pleased with the EPS in my Fit and Insight. Steering is silly light even at a dead stop.
Hydraulic power steering deletes often show large economy gains, so I'd expect going with a larger pump would have correspondingly worse economy.

oilpan, so you are saying that there would not be a negative effect on FE if I installed a big PSC hydro-assist power steering pump?
I've considered switching to electric. Do you have anything to say on the reliability of electric power steering systems? The reliability factor is pretty important for what I will be using my vehicle for.

I'm sure it would depend on the rack but Honda's OEM system has failure rates low enough that I've never heard of issues with it on any vehicle, ever. There's no fluid to deal with, no hoses to leak, just a small electric motor with a worm gear attached to what is otherwise a manual steering rack, and a torque sensor that detects which way you're trying to turn the wheels.

I don't know the specifics on what you have versus the after market one.
My guess would be that the after market one does pump higher volume.
The problem is the higher volume pump is trying to do more work when it's unloaded. That's why it would use more fuel.

What is the problem to be solved here? The old cars in my fleet without power steering taught me to steer while moving, instead of cranking on the wheel at a dead stop. Maybe just a change in technique would help...

Power steering is a pretty nice creature comfort to have while rock crawling.
Electric would be super cool but I think it would be complicated to implement. Ive seen systems you can swap in but they are all well over $1000. I really would like to make my own powerful electric steering but setting up things with my car's computer sound a bit too hard for me.
So I'm open to a conventional performance setup if it doesn't really hurt FE.
