Honda announces 3rd gen Honda Insight (2019) = a less ugly Civic sedan
Honda is recycling the Insight name again. 3rd time's a charm?
This time, instead of building a dedicated hybrid platform as it did for the first 2 cars, the 3rd attempt looks like a de-uglified version of the Civic sedan.
So basically, it's a Civic Hybrid in all but name, with slightly less crazy sheet metal and fewer fake vents.
We don't know any drivetrain details yet.
Jalopnik says the above "prototype" will be shown at the upcoming Detroit auto show, so we may learn more details then.

Not sure which one I like / dislike more...
Hopefully the drivetrain is impressive. C'mon Honda, we know you got it in you.

I'm sure the new drivetrain will be more impressive than IMA was, in terms of efficiency (and hopefully battery longevity).
It'll surely have an EV-only mode like the new Accord hybrid.
If it doesn't, I give up on Honda.

better drivetrain
Yup, GCR mentions the use of a 2-motor system:
Quote:
Crucially, the 2019 Insight will use Honda's two-motor full hybrid system, pioneered on the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid sedan and now in its third generation in the 2018 version of that model.
[...]
The two-motor system allows sustained electric running for 1 mile or more, unlike the small mild-hybrid system used in the first- and second-generation Insights, which couldn't move the car on electric power alone.

Re: aero...
Honda hasn't released the Cd of the 2016 Civic sedan on which this is based. The only reference I can find is:
Quote:
Class-Leading Aerodynamics
The new Civic's sleeker body design combines with aerodynamic features, including nearly full underbody covering, front and rear wheel strakes, optimized rear exhaust silencers and a highly aero-efficient engine compartment, to create the most aerodynamically efficient body in the Civic class. The 2016 Civic Sedan's Cd*A – the combination of coefficient of drag (Cd) and frontal area (A) – is improved by 12 percent over the outgoing Civic to best-in-class levels, based on Honda internal test data. The Civic aero design was optimized using a combination of advanced CFD (computation fluid dynamics), and wind tunnel testing of highly detailed 25- and 40-percent scale models and a 1:1 full-scale model.

So, it's better than the 2015 model is all we know.

Looks quite aero to me, especially in light of the typical vehicle. Smooth taper from roof to trunk.

I liked the looks of my G1 Insight a lot better.
This looks just like everything else on the road. If you slapped a Mitsubishi or Hyundai emblem on it I wouldn't know the difference

Hard to tell the scale by the pictures, but the new Clarity is a very large car. I was just at the Honda dealer getting my airbags replaced on the Civic and eyed one up in the showroom.
