Checked your odometer, lately?

Greetings,

We went on a family day trip yesterday (to go watch a UMass men's rugby game), and I took advantage of the mile markers (every 0.2 miles) they have along Route 2 to check the accuracy of the xD's odometer. I reset the Trip B odometer as I past the 100 mile mark, and then I watched as I drove along. The result was that the odometer is reading ~3% too low -- it is off by slightly more than 0.8 miles over 26 miles. In other words, the odometer finally read 26 miles when I past the 26.8 mile marker.

If you have not checked your odometer -- it might be reading too few or too many miles, so it is worth checking for better accuracy of your FE.

Good reminder! Last time I checked mine was off by about that much but I was too lazy to be on top of correcting for it every time

When I purchase a used car this is the first thing I check.

In Washington on I-90 near Medical Lake there is a odometer checker. I'm not to sure if other states have them but they come in handy.

Nice reminder

I just recently used my GPS to compare the speed I was actually driving to what the SG/speedometer was showing and I was actually surprised by how close they were (difference of less than 1 mph going 65).

i need to calibrate mine, i'm running 205/45/16 compared to stock 195/55/15 and before my current 205/45/16 i was on 195/50/15 w/ rnr replica rims to go as low as possible w/o rubbing the subframe w/o sacrificing too much size difference

i don't feeel like googling right now too tired, anyone want to link me or tell me how to calibrate my speedo/odo?

thanks!

I just did a GPS check on my wife's Civic :

31.5 Miles GPS / 30.3 miles odometer = 1.0396 => 3.96% => The odometer is almost 4% too slow!!!

I don't remember it being off by that much in the past. It had OEM tires back then, but I am positive we are using the same tire size on the new set.

Remember that this can change as your tires wear, too. It can easily be a % or two different between new tires and worn ones.

I have to set the cruise control to 73 km/h for the GPS to show 70 km/h (more than 4% off), but at 100 km/h the cc also has to be 3 km/h more (103 km/h, only 3% off). It appears that the difference depends on speed?

Hmm, more accurate at higher speed?

Perhaps the factory calibrated the speedo/odometer at highway cruising speed...

cfg83 - I haven't done a distance comparison yet, I was just looking at the indicated speed. Perhaps I should, as I assume the results would be much more accurate than just trying to compare speeds while driving!

I second what PaleMelanesian said, tire wear can easily make a difference too.
