Vman455 -- I've got you worst case scenario right here:

I'd seen the headline and passed, but I took a look:

Society will collapse by 2040 due to catastrophic food shortages, says Foreign Office-funded study
vs
Quote:
'The results show that based on plausible climate trends and a total failure to change course, the global food supply system would face catastrophic losses, and an unprecedented epidemic of food riots'

The statistics for this incredibly successful indoor farming endeavor in Japan are staggering: 25,000 square feet producing 10,000 heads of lettuce per day (100 times more per square foot than traditional methods) with 40% less power, 80% less food waste and 99% less water usage than outdoor fields.

niky -- we are in agreement.

You'd think market forces would force balance in population vs resources... but noooooooo.

I keep up-to-date on r/funny, hoping to cheer myself. This is the most recent post:

I do not understand how it is supposed to be funny and it can actually be deleted for that, but the moderators selectively enforce the laws. Looking at the comments, instead of people complaining that it was not funny, that it was stupid, or that we get more of these posts during the summer, some said to just close the door, offer someone a ride, and ask "What did you do?!" Then many people explained that it must have been staged.

Hey, I like this one: Loki'd - Imgur

In many of the posts and comments, I think that their sense of humor indicates terrible things about them.

[Edit:] Sometimes I laugh at something and on occasion, people share things that I find interesting. Basically, I am this kid, waiting for you guys to do something incredible, but meanwhile, I am looking at Reddit on my phone:

This is why I said "worst case." The likelihood of an asteroid hitting the earth in the next 25 years is very, very small (according to NASA, "...as best as we can tell, no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years"), and much smaller than the likelihood that humans continue on their present course of population growth, resource consumption, and environmental destruction. I leave it here merely to ensure we are all grounded in reality, lest we get too caught up in utopian visions of post-carbon hippie forest life (which, for the record, I think would be nice but extremely unlikely to happen).
