If it where me I would put the engine trans in the rear, but in the stock configuration. But personally is it worth it?
There are a few electric Ghia around that are just too interesting, do the hybrid as it should always have been done. Electric drive on a VW trans, diesel gen set over the top or wherever it fits.
It probably takes 5-10 HP to replenish a smallish battery enough to keep an electric car running in all conditions. Too me thats almost irresistible.
Really the Prius has been done, its time to move on ...
and I own one

....been done time to move on, replace the entire VW engine and transaxle with a 98lb, 68hp Toyota MGR. Rear-hybrid? Put a Buick lacrosse altermotor on the VW engine.

Bellybutton cars? Like a red 32 Ford with a Chevy V8?

My 06 has Modellista lowering springs, and it bottoms out on some speed bumps. I don't know how well 2" would work, though I know that's common for people who mod the suspension.
If I were you, I'd invest in bagged struts/shocks, so you can at least bump up the ride height if needed.

That, with a random portable genset attached at the former engine bay, would be an interesting approach to say the least.
