I bought a TDI!
I was very lucky to find a 2003 Jetta TDI a few weeks ago. It has quite a few problems (like 8 check engine codes and a bad ball joint), but I bought it for a project down the road a bit. I am excited to daily drive it (after I fix all the problems) and finally join the 50+ mpg club!

And no range anxiety.
Add propane injection so you can roll coal on stupid drivers doing stupid stunts.

The only issue is that I have the automatic, which is less efficient than the manual.

My neutered tdi does 49.6 city 55 long distance being driven by my hotrodding wife, no mods, wide profile handling rubber. I expect better from Ykyaem.

My friend burned through 3 VW diesel engines. I don't think any were TDI though.
Not sure if he's got bad luck, or creates it. He's also burned up a Ford Ranger engine (started a small fire when we popped the hood).

We shall see.
The PO said he would get 40-44 mpg out of it, but it is not in great condition. I can even tell that it has been off road with the mud and leaves underneath! Hopefully I can get it to 50+ mpg just by fixing the stuff on it. I drained the ATF yesterday and the fluid is very dirty. I will get to the filter today or tomorrow. The EGR and turbo both seem to have issues, which are probably adversely affecting mpg.
Since I will be tearing the engine out eventually for a project, I don't mind doing lots of permanent aero modifications for fun. Right now I have an upper grill block, side skirts, and a rear box cavity planned.

My experience with VW diesels is they last an insane amount of miles of just taken care of correctly, at least the non-turbo versions. The main thing is the timing belt. Once that goes forget it.

I just dropped the transmission pan. It was a lot worse than I thought, but at least there was no large metal shavings.

A guy I was in high school with bought a Ford and didn't check the oil. It lasted 75 miles. So he ought another Ford (engine?) and didn't check the oil. He was on his third engine by 150 miles.
