My Jeep Liberty is a comparable vehicle. It gets 30mpg at 60-65 with no modifications except it has a DIESEL engine.

My wife had a '96 Explorer with the OHV 4.0L and 2WD. On my best behavior, I managed 19mpg on straight highway driving at about 60mph. And about 16mpg in mixed driving. That thing was a dog.
This guy has the SOHC 4.0L and some mods that should benefit mpg. I can see it being possible, but unlikely. And highly unlikely at 70mph.

Latest road trip:
515 miles total
avg speed on way uo - 71.2
avg speed on return - 81.6
150 miles driven around town
MPG - 26.8
This was (except the in town leg) with 4 adults, 10 scuba tanks and all personal dive equipment
And gasoline was $1.39/gl (2002 post)
My first thought is: Where are the similar spec'd Exploders driven by others in similar climate/terrain showing similar numbers? No need for exactitude, just ballpark similar.
Our stock straight-six 2WD 2001 Jeep Cherokee would do 22 at 70. An Exploder is larger, heavier and doubtfully more fuel efficient, especially loaded to the gills with people & gear, flying down the road at over 75 mph.

Really? I thought it was a joke. And now, after reading it, Aldive was on to a few tricks, but I am not quite convinced he really got the mileage he claims. The HHO thing nails it though.

im going to do a lot of research about it, but if it truly is as simple as he made it look then I cant see why it wouldnt be a viable option.
if I can make the Xterra get 30mpg hwy, Id be ecstatic !
